Hi, i have brought a 2 foot corn snake 3 days ago and put it in a glass viv and i have a heat mat connected covering just under half the size of the viv (underneath the tank). some times the glass gets misty, even tho the bowl is in the cool end can you tell me why. And the warm side is reading 29c and the cool side is reading 23c is that normal, i have put the snake on aspin bedding also. however i have been reading that most of you have a thermostat that is connected to the heat mat, do you need one?, if i do can you recommend one that is fairly cheep and works well, and my thermeters are sat on the aspin bedding each side of the tank but there are not digital, if i am missing anything can you please advise Thanks Dan |

If you get a digital thermostat then it can be inside the Viv under the Substrate, This will give a reading that the snake will be subject to. This is more important than how hot the Mat itself gets. |

Mats get up to 100 Degrees C, but they use infrared and heat up the surfaces of objects so the glass could crack. 30 Degrees C is the hottest the viv should get at the hot end. |

if the viv is properly ventilated then the glass shouldnt fog up- check there is no spilt water and damp aspen. as stated above, thermostats are essential, and a mat should NEVER be used without one. they can be picked up for around £20-£25 pounds . |

How long do you have to wait until you can hold the snake again after feeding |

the probe of the digi in the warm end should ideally be in the same place as the probe, I use a cable tie to keep them together and thread it through the plants so he doesn't move it around and place them IN the warm hide touch the glass where the matt is.
Same for cool hide, but you don't need two stats for this digi thermo in the cool hide on the aspen.
pics of your set up may help aswell

am i write to say that a habistat turns the mat off when its too hot or does it lower the temp of the mat. but can you get ones that lower the mat temp, if so is that better than the one that turns it off. thanks |
