Posted - 25/08/2013 : 15:27:37 Been reading the Munson Plan. How many people stick to this? My corn is on double pinks and I feed him Every Sunday. (Seven days). The Munson plan says 2 pinks every 4-5 days. so am I not feeding him enough?

Posted - 03/09/2013 : 10:56:55 The majority of people don't bother giving any sort of vitamins or supplements, and their corns are perfectly fine, so it's really not necessary. As to the amount of food given, it really depends on his girth (width at his widest point), rather than any other measurements. A food item should never be more than 1.5 times the girth, and if you feed an item and note that it's not leaving much of a bump, then consider doubling up for a while or moving up to a larger food size :) |

Posted - 02/09/2013 : 22:05:20 So Sid was fed last Tuesday. 2x pink. Decided to try uping his feed to every 5 days. He refused both pinks this Sunday. So will stay with the every seven days feeding. Not sure exactly how old he is. He is approx 18 inchs long. And weights 20g. does this sound about right for his size. Should I put any sort of supliment/vitamins in his water? Thanks. |

Posted - 27/08/2013 : 10:09:04 No. If it's the unedited one I think its too much food. I just use the 1.5x width for smaller snakes and weather I think they can handle it. |

Posted - 26/08/2013 : 08:57:02 As everyone else has said, it's all very well having a plan but you must be flexible and adapt as your snake grows. I personally feel that the Munson plan feeds too much for pet snakes as it's intended for breeders trying to raise snakes to breeding size quickly, and following the same plan with a pet that's not intended for breeding can lead to obesity (breeding takes a lot out of a snake, especially a female, and the brumation period before the breeding season also helps to control their weight, though many pet-keepers, myself included, don't bother with brumation), but that's just my opinion. I do have a plan for my snake, but it's one of my own invention that I will be happy to change if need be. One thing I do that might be quite unusual is feed an alternating diet while moving up sizes, for example for a while he was one fuzzie, small, fuzzie, small, etc. and now he's on small, small, fuzzie. I personally think this helps keep his growth in-check so it doesn't go wild, but it's all up to the individual really :) |

Posted - 26/08/2013 : 08:44:23 I did use the Munson plan with my first corn - but only as a guide not as a 'you must do this' and I didn't go up to the meal sizes at the suggested weights (especially with my second corn as she was long but slender, so going up a feed size at the weights suggested would have been too large a meal for her). Personally I feed single pinks every 5 days, doubles and fuzzies every 6, then smalls every 7. |

Posted - 25/08/2013 : 18:49:02 Thanks everyone. Think I'll try him on 2 pinks every 5 days and see how he goes.

Posted - 25/08/2013 : 17:22:02 I do single and double pinks at 5 days and single/doubble fuzzies at 5-6 days depending on size of the food and so on :) |

Posted - 25/08/2013 : 16:25:21 As above, though I generally feed pinkies at every 5 -6 days, fuzzies at every 6 -7 days, and then smalls or mediums every 7 days. Large every 7 -10 days, XL every 10 -14.
More importantly though, common sense is the best thing. So, or example, if you have a skinny hatchie, that's been on maintenance diet, you'll gradually reduce the feeding gap, and as long as he digests the food fast, feed every 5 days. If one of my snakes, who normally feeds on XL mice, haven't fed for 3 -4 weeks ( for example, first in shed, then we're away on holiday ) - I'll give him a large mouse to start with ( size smaller than normal ), but then it'll get an XL mouse maybe just a week after, to make up for the lost feed.
I wouldn't feed any shorter, than every 5 days, even hatchies, otherwise you could overload their digestive systems. |

Posted - 25/08/2013 : 15:45:22 It completely depends on the individual animal. It's all well and good having or following a "plan", but each animal will grow at its own rate, regardless of how much it is fed. You need to feed each animal individually, and feed it an approprtiate sized prey item based on its own size.
Feeding more than every 5 days isn't recommended. I feed every week, and my corns all grow at healthy rates with no issues. Some people feed pinks at every 5 days, fuzzies at every 6 days, smalls every week, and then mediums/larges every two weeks when the adults are appropriately sized. But then as I said, it's all down to the individual animal :) You're definitely not underfeeding if that's what you're worrying about! |
