Well today is finally the day... Esfa has just finally moved from a rub to her 3ft vivarium. I have posted several topics about vivs and advice.

However, what I want to ask this time is....

Have I gone too far? Maybe too much decor and over done it? I just don't think I'm ever going to see her again lol

Basically just after your opinions, good or bad on this as a corn snake vivarium, I won't be offended.

Thanks

Thanks for the reassurance. I've decided to keep her in it, she seems perfectly happy, the temps are all fine. Everytime I try get her out, she sneaks off into the plants and wraps in them to make life difficult for me lol.

I must have spent about a month decorating it all trying to make it perfect. Putting as much as I could to keep her entertained as well as being able to hide. Wasn't that expensive thanks to dunelm mill and a couple of bamboo canes.

Thanks for all of your replies.

I use a mat and bulb. My mat is set to 28.5 and the bulb to 28 at ground (is almost 30 at the guard). Gives them belly heat for food but also ambient warmth for when they wanna climb and get warmer

But a lot of people just use bulbs or just use mats. It's a personal preference. The dim red glow on my bulb is quite nice for night time viewing

Just checked the probe in the hide and it was 27.6, the outer substrate was 29.3

And you have an extra 5 months experience than me.. So you win on that one lol

Corns are pretty hardy, nothing in what you posted would make me worry over much.. I think the question is more 'what's best?'

tho you can see that the hide is ' cooler'

Do you have a thermometer probe under the hide? if so what is the temp?

You can make a guard out of 'chicken wire' for the lamp.. Should be a couple of bucks at any hardware store.

I don't mean to be rude as I do appreciate that people do have doubts on using lights.. But in your 2 links.. It doesn't actually say they shouldn't be used. I've just read them and it states the a mat is the most commonly used and the other link is to a plastic faunarium, one of which I used to set up my rub.. They don't actually say it is harmful to use a bulb.

I'm not going to start a debate or an argument as I am not experienced enough, I am just following advice given to me from reptile shops, members on here from when I asked questions and also things on the Internet. I am just following advice given.. Which is the best I can do

No arguments from me just an addendum. The sun will also warm the 'thing' the snake was sitting on so you get Belly Heat and Direct Radiation in that 'snakes in nature' argument.

Given that I've been keeping snakes for oh... 10 months or so.. i'm not going to make any claims about my expertise, I'm doing the same as you.

I'll check the probe when I get home, I was concerned about using a light so have put about 5 thermometers all over the viv to check for the first few days to try and make sure all the temps are correct, one of them being under the hide.

The reptile shop near me recommended the viv, the heating and the lighting.. I wanted something permanent that looked nice. I had heard horror stories about undigested food in corns because they need belly heat, therefore I was dubious of this light. I researched it and made many phone calls to different shops and all assured me it would be fine.. I think it's BRILLIANT it looks just fantastic your snake is going to LOVE it!!
Scott-P Posted - 11/07/2012 : 20:34:40

Thanks for the replies.. Glad that you all like it. Esfa seems to be enjoying it so far exploring the branches and leaves.

I must admit from a comment made earlier, I really didn't consider it for when she went to the toilet and trying to find it, but the branches and rope is removable anyway. Just might take a bit of hunting.

Thorne walker - I have decided just to heat just by the bulb. I was considering a heat mat as well but have been assured by several people and my local reptile shop, that it is not needed and the light is just as good. As the bulb is infared it can be used day or night and it is also connected to a dimming stat.

Georgina - I wasn't aware I could buy a guard to fit the tube? I have tried looking on eBay and posted a topic on here asking but nothing came of it... Any advice would be appreciated though

It looks great! I really like the climbing ropes, bet she'll love her new home

Only a few criticisms/points:

1) The Cork bark is your 'cold' hide? I'd shift it further away from the 'hot' hide and maybe shade it with some of the greenery. (edit: I see the coconut hiding back there.. sneeky lol )

2) I see a lamp over the 'Hot' hide is there a mat under it?

Otherwise it looks great!

Looks amazing - since giving my snakes more places to 'hide' I actually see them more often. They 'hide' in the foliage more as they travel around places, they think they're hidden in the 'cave' I made for them. My OH is very good at placing decor so that we can see into it from the outside, but it still provides plenty of cover for the snakes.

That looks really good, I'm sure your snake will love being in there :)
