Can I clarify, should a heating mat actually go in the tank, under the substrate, or outside the tank?
Different websites seem to be saying different things!

It depends on what kind of tank you have..

If you have a wooden Vivarium it needs to go on the inside, underneath the substrate, as they don't have enough power to heat through the wood.

If you have a glass exo-terra or a faunarium/RUB, then it should go on the outside, as heat transfers pretty quickly through these materials, so it's safer there
