Posted - 05/07/2011 : 15:33:17 Iv put in an order of mice with A&N but they have emailed me to say they are out of stock of xbreeder mice and can substitute them with medium weaner rats.
I know that rats are fattier than mice so should I get the rats and just have a bigger feeding interval or source some xbreeders from somewhere else |

They actually said they were the same size. They didn't say the same weight like I thought but it shouldn't make that much difference. Guess I will see what they are like when they arrive
I have medium rat weaners from A & N and they weigh from about 35g to 43g. |

Posted - 08/07/2011 : 19:33:32 It's not that rats have any more fat on them than mice in proportion to their size, it's just that they're bigger. And they taste better. :P |

Posted - 06/07/2011 : 23:29:46 Rat sizes are decieving...! My boa can eat rabbits and guiny pigs, but cant eat the Jumbo rats from my local shop cause they're like the size of labradors!! |

Posted - 06/07/2011 : 21:28:50 rats are fine, be sure to check the size though, weaners arent small!!! saying that, the alst lot i ordered were smaller than large mice, which was annoying, but not the end of the world.
I wont get in to the arguement about body fat differences between mice and rats again, but suffice to say, its not quite what you think, rats arent that bad.
Bob, your hand writing on the tissue is very neat, you should be proud!!! (insert winking smiley here that i cant find!) |

Posted - 06/07/2011 : 17:02:34 I'm sure it should be fine, they are the ones who know their own sizes better than most, they wouldn't send something too big I'm sure. Good luck on the feeding though if Spot's reaction to a rat is anything to go by it won't be a n issue, and hold your nose, big rats STINK! |

Posted - 06/07/2011 : 00:21:47 Just to demonstrate the confusion that can arise when switching from rat to mouse or mouse to rat I have three snakes and a freezer full of differently sized mice and rats. I just ran to the freezer scooped out a selection of sizes, weighed them and laid them out for a photo shoot. I also have labelled them according to what I ask for at my shop.

Posted - 05/07/2011 : 22:25:48 remind me not to get medium weaners from A&N then lol i'd expect them to be 60-75g ish!! |

Posted - 05/07/2011 : 18:09:50 Thanks. They did tell me that the medium weaners were the same weight as the xbreeders. I'l give them a go. Maybe then Swayze wont decide my fingers are his 2nd course. |

Posted - 05/07/2011 : 17:39:45 i'd go with the rats as long as their 'medium weaners' are of a comparable size.......alternatively, if they have large mice in stock, i'd just feed larges and maybe 2 per feed on the odd week |

Posted - 05/07/2011 : 17:11:31 Just extend the gap between feedings. My Spot gets the odd rat here and there and his feeding response to them is incredible.
I'm sure that if they are recommending them they will be a good match weight for weight just watch out as I've seen rats called allsorts, very confusing. |
