just got my heatmat setup in my viv for the first time. i have 2 digital thermometers, one on the mat, the other not on the mat.
after 45 mins of being turned on, the mat got no higher than 27 degrees and the thermometer away from the mat was at 18 degrees.

so i guess my mat is working - my question is, how long does a 6x11" mat take to get up to 29 degrees? i thought it would be up to temp within 30 mins but it seems not!

by the way i dont have my snake yet - this is a very early test with the viv still in my garage

thanks for al your replies - i finally feel like im getting somwhere! only a few items to get for my viv now and i will be able to show you all my setup

ajacklin - i really need an actual lock as i have a small boy who loves to open cupboards etc!
ryanred5 - thanks for the link. it is the same as mine apart from the length, your 100mm and mine 130mm.
if the one i have purchased from the recoomendation of vivexotic doesnt work, i will be sure to pick one up.

Hi

The lock I bought was off Ebay, here is a link to it - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ProRep-Reptile-Vivarium-Lock-100mm-Key-Same-/150436767325?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Reptiles_Spiders_Insects&hash=item2306bae65d#ht_2705wt_908

No I didn't have to bend it at all.

When I said call someone I meant Vivexotic, I was going to give it you but I couldn't find it sorry.

If you are still struggling to get a lock to fit, these fit my vivexotic & do the job:

i have emailed vivexotic - using the address on the vivexotic contact webpage (http://www.vivexotic.co.uk/contact.html)

I asked: Hello, I recently purchased a Vivexotic lx36. A friend of mine told me that I have to have use a ProRep lock, either a 130mm or a 100mm.
I purchased a prorep 130mm lock but it doesn’t fit as the gap between the glass is too small.
Can you tell me what lock I need to purchase please?

they replied: I am sorry that you are having difficulties finding a lock for your viv. I have been on-line for you and found the lock you need. Please click on the link http://www.aquapet.co.uk/catalog/reptile-accessories-sliding-glass-lock-p-171.html

ryanred5, what telephone number did you use? i cant find anything!
did your 100mm one work without any bending etc?
where did you buy it from?
ryanred5 Posted - 23/09/2010 : 13:09:42
I got the 100mm, I don't know if there is much difference in the thickness of the metal of the lock, maybe give the people a call or email to see.
clintham Posted - 23/09/2010 : 09:38:01
i had read on this forum about vivexotics being only suitable with pro rep locks. i got a 130mm one to go on my lx36 but i have still had to bend it it isnt great.
what lock & viv did you get? did you have to bend yours? mine looked like this:

i noticed the one you posted about was in a green box (see below)- is there a difference? would like a perfect fitting lock really.

my snake is due on the 9th october, im counting down the days!

i cant make my mind up about kitchen roll or aspen. i can get horse aspen locally so its cheap enough. i dont want to have any heart attacks thinking hes gone missing when really he has buried himself!
Sta~ple Posted - 23/09/2010 : 07:27:43
That's good then :D Kitchen roll is fine, makes it a lot easier to see baby snakey poo!
ryanred5 Posted - 23/09/2010 : 00:59:39
Btw I noticed you put that you have a Vivexotic viv. If you want to lock it the only viv lock that will work with it is a Pro-Rep viv lock.

We struggled with a normal one but realised the glass was close together, so we rang the people who make the vivs and it was them who told us which lock to get.

Pleasesd to see you got it sorted, happy new snake ( when he / she arrives )
clintham Posted - 22/09/2010 : 22:42:04
i dont understand your post JackHutchy979 sorry

anyway, i setup my test tonight. heatmat in my wooden viv covered by a sheet of kitchen roll. i placed my hide on top of the kitchen roll, then i placed both my thermometers inside the hide.
within 30 minutes it got to 32.7 degrees(unstatted), much higher than my worrying 27 degrees of last night. both thermometers read the same, give or take 0.2
so i think it should be ok - probably have to use aspen rather than kitchen towel tho.

i never thought that a heatmat would not work if it had nothing on top of it. thanks for all the tips/advise given. im much happier that my mat isnt faulty and will be ok for my snake's arrival
JackHutchy979 Posted - 22/09/2010 : 18:46:29
How high will a heat mat go unstated. Well a one which doesn't give the same bother?
clintham Posted - 22/09/2010 : 15:50:02
fingers crossed then - will try a temperature test with both thermometers, using my hide and maybe a towel if my hide makes no difference.
will update later tonight, after testing
Kehhlyr Posted - 22/09/2010 : 15:48:45
And the thin layer of aspen will be enough as well.
So long as the mat has something in contact with it to heat up then it will. They are no good at heating air, unless in a nearly sealed and insulated poly box.
Sta~ple Posted - 22/09/2010 : 15:39:06
That hide is perfect for the job I would have thought :D
clintham Posted - 22/09/2010 : 15:27:20
im being very careful as my wife is scared of my snake escaping or our 18 month old son getting hold of him! thats why im using a partitioned viv rather than a faun. it can be locked! its a vivexotic too, a 2010 model so the gap between the glass is tiny, i mean really really small. i wont need cardboard.

my warm end hide is en exo-terra small hide like this: (i havent used it for my testing yet tho, will do that tonight)
Sta~ple Posted - 22/09/2010 : 15:08:34
Make sure you plug up any holes like cable ones and the viv doors if you pop a baby n there. Not sure really, I know it's not enough for my heatmat but mines big. If you pop a hide ontop of the heat mat that should be enough contact although, I would guess it depends what your hide is in this case. I'm not sure if something like a toilet tub would weigh it down enough.
clintham Posted - 22/09/2010 : 14:08:18
it is a wooden viv that i have put a partition into - so the heatmat will be inside the viv, with a thin layer of aspen on it.

will a thin layer of aspen be enough to make the contact heat that Kehhlyr speaks of?
Sta~ple Posted - 22/09/2010 : 13:47:14
What is the snake going to live in? A faun/RUB or a wooden viv?
