ive been looking all over the place to buy some aspen for vinnie so i go to a local pets at home and they have said they have never heard of it so i go to a pet shop and they you should never use aspen as it will end upkilling youre snake and tried to sell me wood chips i had to walk out the shop before i punched his smug face in the end i went back to the shop where i brought vinnie from and pick a bag up

I use bathroom sealant, just a few small blobs, becomes waterproof and completely non-sticky. Cheap too!

Mine are loose. Non of mine have ever gotten under them. Mine are weighed down by the warm hide and like a climbing branch. |

Thanks for the info about not covering a heat mat up, but what I need to know is do you just place the heat mat loose in the bottom of your viv or do you fasten them down in some way?

A heatmat shouldn't really be covered by anything, hence why you don't put it under the viv.
They need to be able to breathe, having no air movement around it will not help if it overheats.
You can get hotspots which may not be where the stat probe is, resulting in much higher temps than desired.
I don't cover any of my mats in vivs. |

Is your mat loose in the bottom of the viv or have you got it stuck down, if so what did you use?
So many people will say different things about having heat mats covered or uncovered, its hard to know what is right?
One thing I don't want to do is have the mat uncovered and then Tango gets burnt, even though the mat has a stat.

To be honest I don't use anything to cover my mats. I was going to use lino but I made a mistake and got the self adhesive tiles so I didnt want to use those. Since the mat is stated and shouldnt get too hot then I don't think it really matters to have something covering it. Mine haven't managed to bury underneath it either. |

A lot of people use lino. I'm in the process of doing that myself. I got a 7ft x 39ins offcut for a fiver at my local carpet shop and have chopped off large squares which I have laid flat under a heavy rub (not in use) for a few days to make sure they flatten out. Then I intend to cover the heat mat with a bigger area of lino, hopefully fitting snugly to edges of viv. I don't think even the most determined snake could get under that ... anyone with ideas for improvement, please let me know!
One small point. When buying your offcut, choose a piece with a checked pattern. Then when sawing the thing up, all you have to do is follow the lines of the pattern.

I do go to the shop but just for mice and aspen when I run out, other than that I don't use the shop.
How can I cover up the heat mat and keep that secure so Tango can't burn himself on the mat (it is statted btw on a pulse stat)? |

Sounds like your rep shop knows diddly squat. Bet you don't go there anymore. I would suggest though if you really have got tape sticking the cardboard down that you take it off or make sure snakie can't get anywhere near it. There have been some very nasty accidents involving snakes and sticky tape which can possibly result in the death of your snake.

olny costs me 4.99 for a 10 litres bag full and it said on the bag (prorep aspen bedding is suitable for snakes,some lizards,birds and small mammals.it is soft,dust free,odourless and highly absorbent and is made from non-toxic shredded wood sourced form sustainable forests)its ok get eveywhere tho lol  |

Aspen is sold at pet's at home but it's expensive. It depends on the pet shop, if they specialise in exotic pets and reps then I would imagine they would have to or they wouldn't get any business. Ones that sell a wide range of animals are the ones that generally don't know diddly. |
