I have a young cornsnake , 12 months old and about 15 inches long very slim - only had it about 3 weeks .
Anyways , it's eyes glazed over a few days ago and I assumed that it was going to shed it's skin but today it's eyes are chrystal clear again and it hasn't shed any part of it's skin .
What's goig on ??
Was it a phantam skin shed ???

I have 2 that are about a year old, around the 2ft mark and weigh in around 70 & 80 grams. |

billi is a July 09 amel so just over a year old and she is approx 36 inches and as of yesterday 325 grams, the shop did say she was a good sized female when i had her sexed at the weekend. Yours does sound a little on the small side. How much/how often is it fed??? |

The skin stretches when they shed, so its not an accurate way of measuring them, 14 inches is very small for a year old corn, I would make sure there aren't any patches of skin left on the snake. |

Id say that is probably a little small for a yearling are you sure you have the age right, or that it is deffinitely a complete shed. |

Is that normal for a 12 to 13 month corn snake ??
The HEAD part of the shed is AMAZING in that we can see the EYES in the shedded skin !!! |

Yes, a couple of mine won't feed while planning to shed, others still love their grub.
My Spider (black corn) regularly goes shiny-skinned BEFORE shedding - very confusing! |

The above advice is spot on regarding shedding. As for the feeding I am split both ways. One of mine feeds during the "blue" stage the other wont. With the one that will I generally keep feeding her but I avoid excessive handling. The other one that wont go near a mouse when in shed I leave until the day after he has shed then I feed him. I also avoid handling him too during shed because as said above their eyesight is impared during this stage so I avoid handling him and just leave him too it. Its up to the snake really wether it will or wont eat during shed but in any case missing a feed wont do it any harm they can go for a long long time without eating. |

They go 'blue' then the eyes clear and in a few days they shed. Your snake is perfectly normal.
Regards to feeding...some feed while their snake is in shed others wait until after they've shed. It's just personal choice. I carry on with everything as usual when our Sids is in shed. I still handle, feed and have him out as normal and he's happy with that. Some snakes don't like being touched and will hide away because they go blind when they're blue. You'll just have to see how your snake reacts. Hope that helps. Any more worries, just ask!! Now you've just got to wait for a lovely shiney, new looking snake to appear!!!  |

Hi Zinc, you have been given the right advice here....and dont worry, a lot of new owners have been caught out when their snake's eyes go clear but there is no shed skin in their viv  !
HannahB and DannyBrown are right, and it can take anything from a couple of days from its eyes clearing up to nearly a week or even over....so try not to worry.
What you need to look out for then is it being a bit more active, then rubbing its head along the sides of its viv, hide, any branches, etc. This happens because it is trying to loosen the shed from around its jaw....and once that has loosened then it can happen very quickly! But be warned....I am convinced there is a corn-conspiracy ! They seem to wait until their owners leave the room and then slip out of their old skin and slither round quite happily in their new bright colours showing them off when their owners return to the room....with their old skin lying forlorn in the corner . Seriously though, a lot of corns shed at night and I know a number of members havent had the chance to see their corns shed....despite keeping them for a number of years. So I really do hope you get lucky and get to see your corn shed.
What is vital once it has shed is checking the shed skin for the eye caps and tail tip....as if these are retained they can cause problems. If the shed is not a clean one then you know where you can come for help.
It is a personal choice I think about feeding and handling during the period of them going blue and shedding. I am one of those owners who has chosen not to feed or handle. To my thinking they are very vulnerable at this time as their eyesight is compromised, so in the wild they would be hidden away....not out looking for food. I also know that missing one meal isnt going to make any difference. BUT this is only my personal choice and I know lots of members do feed their snakes - and some snakes will feed while blue but others wont. I also dont handle during this time, as even once their eyes have cleared they are partially blind and I want to avoid as much stress for them as possible (probably the hardest time for me as I get withdrawal symptoms from not having my snake time !!).
So my personal advice would be for you to wait until your snake has shed before feeding it, it wont do it any harm at all....but I must stress that that is only how I feel and others will respond differently. At the end of the day the choice is yours.
Let us know how the shed goes and we will want pics of your snake looking all bright and shiny of course !

So am I correct in just leaving the snake be for a few days , just changing the water !?
It usually gets fed 2 pinkies on a Sunday but I plan on leaving it an extra 4 or 4 days or until after it's shed it's skin .
Does that round ok to you peeps ?? |

Its just a natural part of the cycle he will shed within the next few days. |
