I was told exactly the same thing Natalie, but Kellog's heatmat came with a dimmer stat and I have had no issues with it (and his viv is the big one, so a big mat to control). Because of what I was told I did buy a pulse stat when I set Silvesta up, but as I said, I havent had any issues with the dimmer stat at all.

Only a small one, I don't know the sizes, but you wanna cover about 1/3rd of the floor space.

thats ok then i was told dimmer stats didnt work wiv heat mats thats 1 less problem then! what size heat mats do i need in a 2ft by 1ft viv?
mikerichards Posted - 05/07/2010 : 23:00:31
Well I use dimmers on most of my mats and cables, I think I only use 2 mat stats.

With the money you WILL save yourself over even 6 months, you can buy yourself a nice shiney dimmer stat, and your temps will be solid all year round!!
As above also, a wooden viv with the mat inside, you don't need to worry about any gaps, the heat can escape through any bedding before its gets to be an issue.

can u use dimmer stats on heat mats then i thought it needed 2 be a mat stat on/off or a pulse?? i have a dimmer stat on my bulb can i just use it on a mat then??

well the hot rock is nothing like that, it's a plastic rock which the whole surface of it heats up,

Pebble's do hold heat incredibly well.
Tatsie-j Posted - 05/07/2010 : 19:40:40
thats a good idea suppose it will work the same as well its only coz people keep saying in the wild they get heat from hot rocks i thought it was a good idea!

Those heat rocks are more for lizards. They can be quite dangerous with snakes. I'm sure you can stab a heat rock but it's not gonna need one if you use a mat or a bulb. If you want a heat rock, Get a rock, sterilise it and put it ontop on our heatmat or under your light :)

can u not stat a heat rock as they r basically a heat mat wiv a rock on top? think i might go the heat mat route otherwise tho

heat rocks arent recommended with corns - they can burn themselves pretty bad,
what are the vivs made of? if they are wood the heatmat just goes straight into the viv with the stat probs on top, if they are glass then underneath with a slight gap is better - theres an increased chance of the glass cracking if theres not an adequate air flow between the heat and the glass,
personally theres not a large difference between lights and mats - the mats heat the ground surface but the lights heat up the ambient air temp aswell as the surfaces, plus you need a different stat with the lights

can i use heat rocks? you can but they are notoriously unsafe, and your snake could get severley burnt. they look good if not y not?
wiv a heat mat should it have a gap underneath it mine currently havent?? In a viv, no. But depending where the cable hole is, it may look like its elevated slightly, as my hole for the cable is about 2cm from the floor, so it is slightly sloped.whats the difference between using a light to heat over a mat in regards to how it will affect the snake?matts are prefered as corns get their heat from their bellies, but theres no real difference, as the snake will get his heat from the bulb too as it heats the air and the surroundings, as it warms surfaces, bulbs are generally more expensive, and require more attention, i,e light fittings, the guards and stats can cost of in excess of £30 each, where a matt is £11 for an adequate sized matt, and around £25 for the stat. im sure there is more questions that will come with the answers lol but help in deciding would b great

there ya go.
