just after Christmas, my corn, Cherry, started having very odd problems with here left eye. It started to become bigger and bigger, full of clear liquid.
After taking her to see a number of specialists and a couple of vets (most of which looked at her in confusion and said they had no idea what was wrong) i took here to the people who look after Chester Zoo's snakes. they announced here to have a block tear duct, drained the fluid and sent me on my way with the instruction to come back if it got bad again, but she should get bigger and shift it herself.
Well she didn't, 5 months and numerous trips to the vet later, her eye got so bad it has had to be removed (poor cherry).
she has always continued to be good natured and active through the problem, eating and shedding perfectly (including both eye caps).
she came back from the vets today, and i have been told to feed her today or tomorrow.
I was wondering if anyone else has seen this in corn's as it stumped pretty much all the vets and specialists i saw?
And also if anyone can give me any advice on caring for a corn snake with only one eye? |

I think Nelson was born like it, he was like it when i got him as a 12g hatchling. |

Thanks. It looks like they heal pretty well really.
I have been amazed at how docile Cherry has been, i expected her to atleast try and give me a bite at some point with the meds, but she hasn't once. Just acts like a stubbon child and concentrates on keeping her mouth closed haha. She has been off the meds now for a few days and has started to calm down a little. She has a really good temperament thankfully. |

It is not surprising that Cherry is still very jumpy considering what she had gone through and is still going through (being force fed her medicine)....in fact you must be doing amazingly well with her for her to be happy enough to feed and be handled at all.
I know it must be a real relief finding someone else who is dealing with a one-eyed snake like Nazzle is. your the first person i have met who has a snake with one eye. It reassuring to know that they get on so well, Cherry is still very jumpy but i guess its going to take some getting used to. I actually think she is better at feeding now then she was before the problem began, that or she is just very hungry.
did Nelson have to have is eye removed too, or was he born that way ? Infact, i don't suppose you have any pictures? it would be really interesting to see how they look after its healed and everything. |

Sorry, not had the internet for a while so only just read this. I've got a snake with one eye (Nelson) and he's a darling. The only way he's different to the others is that he whips his head round more often when you go to pick him up, a bit daunting but now I know he's just checking me out it's fine. He tends to lie with his good eye facing towards the outside of his faun, but he doesn't seem to get spooked too much apart from at feeding time, when he tail shakes until he's finished eating (even in a small, dark feeding box). He's about double the size of his sister, so I guess his feeding is good. The only problem he's had is with shedding, but after a few horrendous sheds where the shed started from the neck down, he's good. |

glad shes on the mend and fair play to you for getting her the treatment she needed as i know my self that vets are not cheap and that was probably a pricey procedure.Well done! |

poor baby Cherry, what a lovely name. my ferret was born with slightly blocked tear ducts, i guess your little hatchling was born with the same problem, only worse.
if the antibiotics are thin and runny like water (i dont suppose they are), you could inject the antibiotics into her food? but i guess it is more like a paste? you are very brave and an excellent owner to be able to give her meds. i take my hat off to you. |

oh, poor cherry, that looked horrible. glad to hear she's taking her meds, eating and shedding ok. its great that you care so much to do that for her, as kellog said some poeple wouldn't. hope she's feeling better soon, bless her heart-she's such a cutie let us know how she gets on |

Thanks Kellog. She really hate the stuff, but it has to be done. really don't want here to die. I'm so worried about here getting an infection or Mouth rot or something.
I guess its a good thing that she puts up such a fuss and fights back so much, if she didn't it would be much more worrying.

I know it may feel mean Amy, but what you are doing is probably saving Cherry's life. If she didnt have those antibiotics then she would get an infection and die....that is how you must look at it every time you have to hold her down and force it into her mouth.
I am just so glad she is with an owner who is willing to fight for her life, I know many other owners would have not gone to the trouble and spent the money you have if they were faced with the same problem....but would probably have left their snakes to die. Cherry is a very blessed snake having you for her owner.

sorry for the confusion about which eye it is. It is the left eye that was bad and has been removed, but I took one of the pictures with my Mac's built in cam which flips the image for some reason, acts like a mirror. It is her Left that has been removed. |

n'aww bless her she still looks cute though :)
but you have to remember you are not bein mean by giving her her meds, it is 4 her own good and then hopefully make a full recovery :D |

Tried to take a picture of her today, sorry that its not great.
you can kind of see the stitches. I gave cherry her meds today, its really hard to get them to sit still while you try and put something in there mouth, and i can't help be feel incredibly mean.
