Ahhh he's not as big as I thought, he's only a diddy snake probably not much longer than a foot. 2 Pinkies every 5 or 7 days (you choose, not much in it at that size) will be fine until you've used them all up then move up to fuzzies, just 1 to start with every 7 days.

I'd recommend placing some towel or a flat plate of some kind down when you feed him,or alternatively placing him in a seperate tub for feeding as he may end up ingesting the substrate otherwise.

Shops will say anything. 2 pinkies a week is enough till then :) Pick out the smallest fluffs from the shop, it is amazing how big of an item snakes can eat! 4 pinkies is like the equlient to 2 fluffs anyway so he should easily be able to manage 1 fluff, probably wolf it down and wnat something bigger.

You need a digital therometer, you can gets some cheap off ebay. Myself and others use these, tehy are great as you can get an elesatsic band to band the probe for the theormeter and stat together and then use the suction cup to lick and stick onto the ehatmat to keep it in place.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Digital-LCD-Fish-Aquarium-Water-Terrarium-Thermometer-/320669697113?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Fish&hash=item4aa9674459

NO the sta does not have to match the w of the mat, that stat is fine.
eeji Posted - 10/09/2011 : 16:57:32
at that size i'd be feeding one small or one medium every 7 days

As above if the mat is in the vivarium it MUST have a thermostat controlling the max temperature. That is your number 1 priority, its still warm enough this time of year to be able to switch the mat off until you have a stat and as long as you dont feed the snake it will be fine for a few days. While your buying stuff get a couple of good quality digital thermometers, the ones with probes are perfect, one needs to be attached to the heat mat with the probe for the stat so you can accurately set the stat to the desired temperature.

Also in your picture it appears quite bright in the vivarium so I can assume there is a light of some sort in there, if it is a glass bulb of any sort it needs to be guarded. As well as that unless its LED's or an energy saving bulb it will be generating heat so that needs to be switched off too, if the bulb is exposed, take it out until you have a suitable guard, snakes can break bulbs just holding onto them, picking glass out of your snake will not be a fun experience for anyone.

And the food bit, 1-2 prey items every 5 days is the absolute most you should be feeding your snake. You say that your snake is the length of your arm. A snake of that length (estimating about 2 feet) can easily take fuzzies, small mice and very likely mediums mice too. Don't worry that their head looks too small to eat, they are designed to eat prey items much larger than their head. The guide for how big a mouse can be for your snake is have a look at your snakes body, about half way down will be your snakes thickest point, your snake can eat mice 1.5 times the size of that thickest point. Their jaws can open very wide and their throat is very stretchy, I have kept snakes for a year now and it still amazes me how they eat. Have a look through the pictures section there will be loads of pictures showing snakes eating just to get an idea and put aside any worries that something is too big for your snake.

is the above ebay url ok for the hat matt?? i dont like the idea of not feeding him untill i get one???
kdlang Posted - 10/09/2011 : 14:16:23
Turn the mat off and don't feed your snake until you have got a thermostat. If it feels hot to you then it is way too hot for your snake. The snake could get burnt or suffer neurological damage. You can get a mat stat online for around £25 so not too expensive. Those dial thermometers are pretty useless so you really need to get a digital thermometer too. You can get one of those on ebay for around £3

fluffycorn Posted - 10/09/2011 : 13:13:27
A lot of pet shops give out wrong advice ... I don't bother asking them anymore, I just come straight here instead :)
kerry84 Posted - 10/09/2011 : 13:10:56
ohhh see i was told if you look at the food and it doesnt look as if your snake would eat it then dont try and make him eat so much wrong information being told at pet shops ect. ill give a fluff a try next week gonna stick to feeding him once a week :)
