Posted - 19/08/2013 : 00:29:42 Hello everyone,
I bought a gorgeous little late CB11 girl home from Kempton last week. She regurged the night I got her (I haven't fed her yet, she's on a diet of reptoboost atm) and has hidden ever since. Today I finally managed to get a quick snap of her while spot cleaning. She's in blue and has hidden her face, but she has beautiful big black eyes. I know she's a lavender, but I'm not sure if there's something else going on with her and would appreciate your opinions/expertise! She has a completely white belly with no checkers. She's a possible het for hypo. Many thanks!

Posted - 26/08/2013 : 21:11:37 They're funny little things aren't they! Archimedes is like that, if you watch him too closely while he eats, he'll drag his mouse off into his hide and then appear a few minutes later to show off his mousey lump lol |

Posted - 26/08/2013 : 09:22:27 Glad she ate, when I first got my boy he wouldn't eat with anyone watching either, we all had to leave the room, then when we came back ten minutes later, he'd be looking all fat and pleased with himself :) He's getting more comfortable now though and is happy to eat with m watching provided I keep still and stay a couple of metres away from the viv. :) |

Posted - 26/08/2013 : 00:28:25 Kyra has finally eaten! Hurrah!! I popped a fluff into her RUB last night and watched and waited hoping she'd come out and take it, but she didn't. I went to run my bath and in the time it took me to rinse the bath and start to run it, she'd come out, taken the mouse and vanished again! Cheeky girl! I'm thrilled she's finally eaten. |

Posted - 23/08/2013 : 10:26:51 Well, sadly she didn't eat her hopper :o( However, I think her age/food size is all wrong! I weighed and measured her last night too (no mean feat I can tell you), she's only 46g/70cm, so I seriously doubt she's any kind of CB11! I'm thinking more like a late CB12, seeing as my Archie (CB03/13) is 35g/54cm. With this in mind, a small mouse, even a really small mouse would be a really inappropriately sized meal for her (which is what the breeder claimed she was eating) and even a hopper is a bit big. So, I'm going to leave her for today and try her on a Fluff tomorrow evening to see if she'd rather take that. If she doesn't, I'll pop her back on Reptoboost and try her again in a week.
Regarding the popping - I had no idea it was really only effective on hatchlings! It could well turn out that Kyra is actually a boy, in that case! Not that it would matter too much, it'd just mean I'd need to get another snake to balance things out ;o)
I'm still chuffed with Kyra regardless of morph or gender, I just hope that she calms down a bit and starts eating for me soon. Thank you all for your help and lovely comments! |

Posted - 23/08/2013 : 08:11:24 Hope she's eaten it for you :-)
Just a thought - you said you watched the breeder popping her... thing is, you can reliably only pop very small hatchlings, in the first month or so. After that, the males would have developed enough muscle control to hold " the bits " in, so they will mostly falsely pop as females. To try and pop something that's 18 months old....hm.
She's a lovely girl, though, and whatever she is, I think you've got yourself a bargain. |

Posted - 22/08/2013 : 23:57:35 Thank you Tally!
Marc, Thank you, but I'm afraid she has to stay with me, despite her being a naughty bitey little minx! She struck her hopper tonight, but then dropped it. I've left it in her viv, so hopefully she'll take it during the night! |

Posted - 22/08/2013 : 21:47:12 Well, Kyra shed this morning and so I thought I'd try to grab a couple of pics for you this evening. I apologise for the quality, but Kyra didn't want to play nice and after she struck at my phone twice, my daughter lost her nerve a bit - lol! Her belly shot and the eye shot were too blurred to be of any use, but I did look at her closely and her belly is completely white with absolutely no suggestion of checkers or any coloration at all and her pupils look slightly red in the light. I will try again to get some clearer pic next time....providing she can stop rattling and striking long enough lol

Posted - 19/08/2013 : 23:11:58 Thank you, I watched the breeder pop her (and all the other lavenders) at the show and he said she was female....I must admit I'm now questioning if he was right. It looked like an awful thing to do to a snake tbh!
I will have to think about having her probed in the future, but that's a long way off yet. |

Posted - 19/08/2013 : 23:05:23 If you plan on breeding her it may be worth getting her gender confirmed just in case. The only 100% accurate way is breeding them but probing and popping are both quite accurate when done properly however both are quite invasive procedures and do carry a small amount of risk. Reptile vets, snake breeders and reptile shops will often sex a snake for you although you may need to wait until she's older/bigger depending on how confident they are with probing |

Posted - 19/08/2013 : 19:51:17 I'll happily post head and belly pics once she's shed.
I'm very happy I got her and believe me she will be a spoilt little lady!
It's never bad to get more than you bargained for - even if its a little confusing!
In a few years, once they're both ready (and I know what I'm doing), I plan to put her with my boy Archimedes. It'll be interesting to see what the results will be. |

*snigger* *ahem* Yeah, getting the morph quite wrong and feeding it just before taking it to a show is just not that smart. Although at least you got it for a brilliant price and it's in a good home now |

Posted - 19/08/2013 : 18:31:14 diffused is a good call (which would make her a plasma), can you post a belly and head shot once she's shed? |

Posted - 19/08/2013 : 17:46:59 The Motley / Stripe ones are tricky though, it takes some time to get your head around it :) It's the whole co-dominant over another specific gene and allelles.. It gets a bit much sometimes. Anyway if you know who the breeder was, get some info about the parents if at all possible, and we can take it from there.
Awesome little thing though :) Congratulations! |

Posted - 19/08/2013 : 17:30:09 Ah I see, I'm new to the morph game (have always just gone for what I like the look of), but I'm trying to learn as much as I can about it. I'd told the breeder that I had been looking for a lavender stripe initially, he said that there were motleys in the clutch, so she'd have the motley stripe gene in her....maybe he thought I'd be more likely to buy her if he said that (I was going to buy her anyway). That's another bit of info to add to the memory banks - thanks! |

Posted - 19/08/2013 : 17:11:33 That is a snazzy price...!! Just a note- she can't be het for Stripe and Motley. If this girl was, then she would be a visual motley stripe- as because they're allelic, it'd show. So she's either het motley OR het Stripe, that being the case. I think we've also established homo diffused also ;)
In short I don't think this person should really be breeding/selling corns if they don't have the foggiest what they're on about. |
