So, I hope i dont sound daft asking this, as ive only ever dealt with normal patterned corns..

Just wondering, do the genes that determine the pattern work in the same way as the genes for colour..

ie, is the normal saddle mark pattern dominant to stripe and motley..
and can they be het for certain patterns...
are there more patterns than normal, stripe and motley?

any more info on it would be much appriciated.
Cheers, and dont laugh if i sound daft

Ah I see.
I can see why it was thought to be to do with diffused then, with the head pattern like on bloodreds.

I had no idea there were so many patterns lol

yeh, masque originally was thought to be a trait of diffused (or het diffused) but has been since isolated as a separate gene. It gives the bald/skull head pattern and gives a clear 'line' down the middle of the belly chequers
QueenVic Posted - 06/06/2012 : 01:36:17
Jeez, didn't realise there were so many.

Never heard of Masque, strange that its dominant over normal!!
Just had a look and I like the pattern it gives their heads :D very nice, but its not that different to normals really lol, still nice though.

Too much choice hahaha, I think ill stick with getting a stripe to find out if my male is het for it :)

you've got loooooooooads of choice!

Corn snake patterns:

Motley - recessive to normal, allelic to and dominant over stripe (meaning a het motley het stripe looks motley)
http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/motley

Stripe - recessive to normal, allelic and recessive to motley
http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/stripe

Diffused - recessive to normal
http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/diffused

Sunkissed - recessive to normal (SK has one or two effects, either pattern modifier or pattern modifier and hypo effect)
http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/sunkissed

Palmetto - recessive to normal
http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/palmetto

Terrazo - recessive to normal
http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/terrazzo

Tessera - dominant over normal (means a het tessera looks like a tessera)
http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/tessera

Masque - dominant over normal (once thought to be caused by being 'het diffused')

Zigzag - polygenetic selectively bred - cannot be het zigzag
http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/zigzag

Aztec - polygenetic selectively bred - cannot be het aztec
http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/zigzag

Banded - polygenetic selectively bred motley - cannot be het banded, only motley
http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/banded

Hurricane - polygenetic selectively bred motley - cannot be het hurricane, only motley
http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/hurricane

Pinstripe - polygenetic selectively bred motley - cannot be het pinstripe, only motley

Q Tip - polygenetic selectively bred motley - cannot be het q-tip, only motley

Cube - polygenetic selectively bred stripe - cannot be het cube, only stripe
http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/cube

Sunspot - polygenetic selectively bred stripe - cannot be het sunspot, only stripe
http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/sunspot

Vanishing (Patternless) - polygenetic selectively bred stripe - cannot be het vanishing, only stripe
http://iansvivarium.com/morphs/species/elaphe_guttata/vanishing_stripe

*Masque, q-tip and pinstripe still need adding to the morph guide at IV

Ah i see.. i think! lol
Im going to get a visual stripe and cross my fingers that my male is het, i guess ill see :)

Thanks for the info people.

you wont get genetic motleys if you breed with a het motley stripe x stripe just possibly visual in appearance

Is the aztec pattern a cross between two patterns or a new pattern in its own right?

Also, if your male is het for motley, you will get some motleys out as well. Motley is codominant with stripe.

The aztec and zigzag patterns are selectively bred, where the saddle pattern on each side of the snake dosn't line up properly...

Het stripe or visual stripe, yes Either should produce stripes. But if you already have a male, then yes he would have to be het stripe for them to produce stripes. But there's no way of knowing I'm afraid unless you know the parents lineage!

normal pattern is dominant over motley and stripe, yes you can get het motley and het stripe you can also get het motley stripe which generally gives some nice visual patterns usually looking like a stripe.

there is also aztec pattern or some call it zig zag
