May well be better suited to general health, but because its a royal i shall put it here!!

This is a pointer to how important it is to check eye caps, this little royal is a rescue by me, shes tiny, at 3 years old she weighed in at 175g!!! Thats about 100g heavier than a healthy average hatchling!!

When i got her, she had retained eye caps, i didnt think much of it, they are easy to deal with......or so i though!!!

After over 2 months of treating her, and removing at least 4 eye caps from EACH eye, there were still at least 2 left on each eye.

Since i have had her, shes eaten every week without fail.
To give you an idea of what kind of feeder she is, i had her out for an hour, bathing and removing eye caps with a scalpel blade and tweezers, after an hour of me holding her head still, she instantly strike fed in my hands!!!

Today, after a few months of me attacking her eyes, she has finally just shed cleanly, removing the rest of her eye caps!!!
All round a brilliant result, and to top it off, shes now 250g!!

Here is a pic of here AFTER removing roughly 8 eye caps, i say roughly, because i really dont know how many i removed, i know it was 4 goes though, and i got at least one off each time.

it goes to show just how important it is to make sure all eye caps are removed, this is a severe case, but none the less, a lesson to us all!

Wow poor snakey - but lucky she found you in the end!

What a difference! Kudos to you for all your hard work with her. Had to laugh at the thought of her charging off looking at things,I bet its like a whole new world for her. Even humans look appetising.

I probably should have been a vet, but no, I am an aircraft tech by trade! Kate, my OH is a vet lab tech with one of the biggest vet labs in the world, to she has access to a lot of things, including a few top vets. My local vet is very good too.

The difference is amazing, sure if she could she would do a happy dance!

She is so lucky to have fell into the right hands! Well done Mike, you have gone above and beyond! Just wondering, but are you a vet? You have such reliable and supportive knowledge... and a scalpel!

I havent had a really good look, i saw she had shed and went to feed her, she didnt hesitate, so i have left her to digest for now.

Wow she looks fantastic though! I'm guessing she hasn't got anything bad permanently with her vision then?
thistle Posted - 24/01/2012 : 20:58:48
She is looking fantastic! She must feel so much better getting those eye caps off.

Good on you Mike, you've obviously put the work in with this one. Sounds like a lovely snake too for all its troubles. I agree with Sta#~ple you need to show off the fruit of your hard work and post some nice clean pics of Blinky Royal.
Sta~ple Posted - 24/01/2012 : 18:25:54
Can we see a happy picture of her eyes nice and normal :P

Good job though bless her.
nusnakemum Posted - 24/01/2012 : 15:41:39
well just as Bluebird said she is lucky to have you to care for her now
mikerichards Posted - 24/01/2012 : 13:49:24
I will never know what her eyes were like before, to compare to after, but, before she was a little nosey, now shes charging off checking everything out!
scottishbluebird Posted - 24/01/2012 : 01:30:47
Glad she ended up with you, and hope her eyesight is ok after all those eyecaps, the relief must have been immense for her
Mort13 Posted - 23/01/2012 : 19:15:38
OMG!! I don't know whats more shocking,a 3 year old female royal weighing 175g at 3 years old,or the amount of retained eye caps! Poor girl, sounds like she's been through the wars.
Well done to you on getting her sorted out. Do you think her eyesight is as it should be after that.....just wondering if having so many caps retained for so long will have had an impact on her eyesight?
She's so cute!

That is a horror story with a build up of so many retained caps. I'm glad that you have finally got them all removed. I bet the snake appreciates it too. She must have understood (in her snakey way) that you were trying to help for her to show such patience.

A small celebratory beer is in order. Well done.

I can assure you i was very very very very very very careful, and then some!
I had her out when i saw she had shed, shes not normally one for exploring, but i could kinda see her thoughts, the 'i can see!!! I am gonna check out EVERYTHING!!!'
Needless to say, she fed like a monster too!
