Posted - 02/09/2013 : 09:06:34 Thanks to my daughter's science teacher, my daughter has developed an interest in corn snakes. Her teacher keeps one in the science lab. After months of careful consideration and research (and waiting in case this was a passing phase!) we finally relented and are letting her have one of her own. We are in the process of setting up the equipment and are looking around for the right snake. We saw this one yesterday, which she has fallen in love with. But I was wondering about the different colour on the head and tail, is this normal? We weren't able to pick it up yesterday, as it had recently fed, but are going back tomorrow for a closer look. What should we be looking for? Any advice greatly appreciated! This is all very new to me.

Posted - 07/09/2013 : 11:52:52 Good on her, and don't worry, I bet you once she has the snakey at home, and shows it to her friends, they'll see it's not horrible. Soon, they'll be won over by its cuteness. And if not, there's lots of us here, who will appreciate nice pics :-) |

Posted - 06/09/2013 : 18:05:43 Good for her not worrying about other people and following what she likes. Don't be nervous - there is such a lot of help to be had on here - you will be fine. I was really nervous to start with and kept on checking to make sure Omar was still alive. Needless to say he was fine - I think they are pretty robust little things really! |

Posted - 06/09/2013 : 09:29:13 Thanks Sankeysal. That's reassuring to know. Still a little nervous about it all, as it's the first pet we will have owned as a family. My daughter is so excited. Feel a bit sorry for her, as none of her friends share her enthusiasm. Two wouldn't even look at the photo! |

Posted - 03/09/2013 : 17:16:20 Thank you all for such a warm welcome. We went back to see the snake today and we all held it. My daughter was beaming. Here is a photo of her holding it. All the equipment arrived this afternoon, so we will be spending the next few days setting it up and checking that it all works. Hopefully bringing the snake home next week. And that's something I NEVER though I'd be saying, LOL!

Posted - 02/09/2013 : 21:41:07 Hiya and welcome :) As above the colours get a LOT brighter as they age - so expect a lovely orangey browny snake when it's older! :) |

Posted - 02/09/2013 : 14:54:38 Hello and welcome to the forum. Lovely little snake there, it doesn't look like there's anything wrong with the colour, many hatchlings are darker on the tail. My guess is it'll develop more orange tones , as it grows. Should the grey areas look like they've got a lifted edges to them, it could be retained shed...but it's difficult to say from photos.
Little hatchlings can be a bit jumpy, fast, and nervous, and can even try to nip ( which doesn't hurt at all and doesn't do any damage ), but that's normal - we're so much bigger than them, after all. They will calm down in time. Just something to bear in mind, if your daughter's very young.
Otherwise they make very good pets - they're quiet, they don't smell, they're clean, undemanding, hardy, very inexpensive to look after, once you have the set up. They get used to being handled - but don't mind if you don't handle them, either.
Just a word of warning, though- you might like the little snaky so much, you might want to get another... once you find out, how many different colours and patterns there are... :-)
