Posted - 14/10/2011 : 21:05:02 Sorry to see such a sad post, I got my corn about 4 weeks ago from a breeder, before I got her I had been looking in various pet shops and I specifically asked two shops if i needed a thermostat and both shops said no. One said I could buy one if I wanted but it would be an extra £25 (so generous)...
I tend to agree with the opinion of maybe not getting another snake, just in case a new snake did get ill and you couldn't get it to the vets, especially if the new one was from a breeder selling it for £15 and then your partner would say "it only cost £15". |

Posted - 14/10/2011 : 10:39:38 Only just come across this. What a sad tale. Please don't hold yourself responsible, you've followed advice given that you would assume to be correct. Corn snakes are fantastic pets and if set up right to begin with are hardy creatures. It must be so hard for you, worrying about the effect this will have on your son and having no support from your partner (disgusting!). I got given one of my snakes for free, but if she was ill I'd take her straight to the vets. Does your partner not realise the worth of an animal, sorry it winds me up. If you do decide to get another snake in the future, you'll get loads of help and advice from people on here. Plus you're already here now so it won't do any harm to read up on them before you make up your mind either way. Theres some good breeders on here too. Did you get it from a shop in Wrexham? Not asking you to name or shame, just curious as I'm localish and curious. |

Posted - 13/10/2011 : 18:08:35 sorry to hear of your loss, what i'd do is major research and jump on the corn snake wagon again. oh and dont listen to that petshop in the future! |

Posted - 13/10/2011 : 16:43:45 So so sorry to hear about your bad experience. I had a young snake die last year and they do deteriorate rapidly as they hide initial signs of illness very well.
When mine died, I really wasn't sure if it had definitely gone or not so I left it overnight to make sure. I think I was kinda hoping for a miracle too and that it would be back to normal but alas rigor mortis had set in. It is heartbreaking and you will keep going over things that you could have done differently but you are not to blame. Yes you could have done more research but why would you have when you trusted that the petshop was giving you all the advice you needed.
I really hope that this does not put you off keeping snakes. They really are lovely pets to have. However, i think if you are going to struggle to get vet care for it then it may be worth waiting until you are in different circumstances. Rep vets can cost more than regular vet check-ups but they are so rarely needed that it shouldn't put you off. I have heard of treatments for dogs costing thousands but people will still pay it even if the dog only cost £100. Sorry but that comment from you partner is just ridiculous.
I hope your son doesn't take it too hard. Unfortunately animals do die but there will be another one waiting for the love he can give. |

i'm sorry for your loss but i have to agree with the above sentiment. being a pet-owner, regardless of what the pet is, is a responsibility and if that includes veterinary treatment then so be it. i'd be fuming at your OH...........in fact i am! |

Posted - 13/10/2011 : 13:42:56 Sad to hear about your son's snake. If as you said, you are not a snake person and it was your son's snake, I wouldn't get another. Especially with your partners really bad attitude.
The price of having a pet doesn't stop with the initial price and set up. If £50 is the price your partner has placed on a snakes life then I think that it would be best leaving it to people who would be willing to take a hit financially and can afford any aftercare.
I think the attitude of people who think that the cost of a snake ends with the inital set up is what is wrong with the hobby. I am in no way saying that people should be priced out of snake keeping. I am saying though that a snake can live for 20 years and vets bills are something which any owner should be willing to pay.
Sorry again for the snake. |

Posted - 13/10/2011 : 09:38:46 this is such a tragic story and just shows that some pet shops really don't give a s**t!
but don't let this put you off having another, just make sure you come here first. there will be plenty of people to help out and even offer links for where to purchase the correct items! |

Posted - 13/10/2011 : 01:07:36 Wasn't a respitory problem with your sons snake, Sta~ple was only giving an example of a condition that does require vet treatment.
Snakes hide illness well as if they appear to be weak they can generally appear to be easy pickings for predators, |

Posted - 13/10/2011 : 00:40:10 Poor snake it makes me soo cross how can shops get away with it its not like its an optional acessory its a basic safegaurd if you dont have a passion to keep and sell animals properly and dont ecnourage your customers to do the same then you have absolutely no bloody right to be selling them in the first place!
Ive seen similar occurences with tropical fish countless times and it really gets my back up that shops just seem to have an attitude that the animals are "stock" and to lose a few here or there is not a problem

Posted - 13/10/2011 : 00:33:03 I did leave mine over night just to check if he was still alive too when this happened to me, plus I had never seen a dead snake before so didn't know what to expect, I was half hoping he'd spring back to life though. I know this might sound a bit morbid but he wont start to smell yet if hes dead from experience, he shouldn't in the morning either |
Kehhlyr |
Posted - 13/10/2011 : 00:27:41 Leave it in the cool end for tonight as well, in the morning you'll know if it is dead as it's eyes will likely have sunk in and rigor mortis will be setting in. The last thing you wanna do is potentially bury it while it's still half alive. |
gmac |
Posted - 13/10/2011 : 00:20:42 do you have a garden or flower bed you could bury it. |
