I hate em. My dog is going mental at the minute cuz some plonker thinks its good! Their own dog is barking like mad, makes you wonder if fireworks are worth it! What's worse is, it's not even bonfire night yet! I am one of these miserable people who don't like them anyway (my dad was a bit wild with them as kids).

Rant over, sorry!

I hate fireworks myself as I have hypersensitive hearing and even wearing earplugs doesn't help the situation. I basically have to be totally under cover, and usually watching something on my DVD player to be able to deal with them...otherwise I go into full on panic mode where it takes about 3 hours after the event has finished to calm me down.

I used to have a cat called Lucie and she was like me and hated them, and used to cuddle up beside me under the duvet during firework season.

My hamster and gerbils on the other hand...aren't bothered one little bit by them and will happily stay asleep or playing lol.

I strongly believe that fireworks should be banned for all the year apart from 5th November and New Years Eve...and even then only let off in proper public events and not in normal households.

My reps really dont care,Spaff really hates the smell too though
lupi lou Posted - 05/11/2012 : 19:58:44
well the snakes aren't bothered in the slightest. the poor horse on the other hand is rather upset, as the garage next to the field didnt bother to tell us that they were having a display!!

I will be getting something for him next year defo, this is the first time he's reacted like this so had no reason to be concerned beforehand.

My reps don't seem to care about any noise, Rubi comes out when the Hoover is on though!

i'll be paranoid about the horse this year as we have moved him closer to home which means rather than him being in a nice quite village, he's now just out side of town. Am sure he'll be fine as he's never bothered before but still can't help but worry! luckly the dogs are fine, saying that Jess is just about deaf so she's oblivious anyway!

I agree, I don't think that fireworks should be on sale to the general public. I do like them though. I've never had a dog, but when i lived at home, we couldn't let our cat out when it was dark for days before bonfire night because he was so terrified of them. One year we lost him for 3 days, which isn't like him at all, because he was out when people were setting fireworks off days before it was even bonfire night, he ran away and we still don't know where he went for those days, but he wasn't right for ages after. Poor little thing, I hope everyones animals are safe this year

Im really struggling with my staffy zig atm , its our first firework nite with him and last nite the some kids were letting them off and he started to pant really bad like he was boiling hot , then shivered and shoock really bad . I managed to sit with him and wrap him quite tightly in a thin blanket . You can buy what are called thunder shirts / jackets for dogs that apply slight pressure to their body and it helps keep them carm .
The best display i went to was at Alton Towers for their haloween fireworks fest , it was fab but havent been to a show for years . At our pub a regular always puts on a big show and i always end up working it lol!

Another issue - fireworks and horses... I suppose I'm lucky mine are in an area in the middle of nowhere, with only couple of farms and other horsey places around, and they certainly wouldn't let off fireworks... + mine hear shooting quite often, so don't jump at bangs. I know lots of people, though, whose horses are sent to a blind panic by fireworks - and what do you do? If you put them in, you're risking they'll injure themselves panicking in the small space of the stable and trying to get out, if you leave them out, they'll run around like maniacs, possibly going through fencing, hurting themselves, etc. You can sedate them, but then you have to supervise them all the time - and you can't keep them sedated for 3 weeks or so. That's the worst thing - it's never just the one night. They'll start 2 weeks before and carry on another week after the event.
I love fireworks, but I'm all for having them just on the day. Rant over.

One of the best things to do is to invest in a DAP plug in for your dog if they are scared of fireworks. It can help relax them and take the edge off a little. Ideally you should have it plugged in for a while before the scary event though.

Maybe you parents of nervy dogs could put some lavender oil in burners about the place (away from scalies obv) it relaxes ppl, I don't see why it shouldn't work on pooches.

On another note Angus couldn't care less, but then again he's not too bright either

My boys have to put up with my ugly mug so don't think anything could scare them lol. But seriously fireworks are not toys and should only be used by responsible people.

Awh, poor pooches

I love fireworks and so does my dog Zack. I think it's all about acclimatising them to the noise and flashes from an early age. By the time Zack's first bonfire night came around we had him so relaxed about them he even came with us to the firework display!

Thanks God for people like you who get their dogs used to everything. My own are the same but the poor little (or big) darlings that come into rescue are normally so terrified of everything it breaks your heart.
I really work hard to get them used to everyday sights and sounds.....the ones that happen once a year are more difficult, even with the specialist dvds!

Thank you I've worked in rescue centers in the past so I have seen some dogs who are terrified of things that they should have been introduced to early on. It really does break your heart to see them. I didn't want my poor dog to be terrified because of me not acclimatising him to something that I knew he would have to hear at some point.

Disgusted to hear that happened. Makes me sick

Thorne Walker Posted - 30/10/2012 : 23:16:24
At one point I was going to get a pyrotech licence, so yeah, I guess you could say I like them.

I know some of the vets round here will prescribe downers for the dogs who get really stressed by out few annual firework events.

We also don't get random stuff.. There are exactly 2 nights per year (and maybe the night or 2 before) where you won't get arrested for setting one off...
