Round the bf's house earlier, get a call from a slightly hysterical and rather scared sounding mother. She'd found a snake!

A road near our area is prone for rubbish dumping etc, but my mum sometimes (like once twice a month) walks past it with the dogs. Happened to walk there today and saw what she thought was a rubber snake. Nooope. She gave it a nudge with her foot and turns out to be a living breathing amel corn.

Had to get her to take her coat off, gently pick it up and wrap it up, all very difficult for her considering she never even held Tartan when I had her. Then she put it in a box in the airing cupboard for a little while to warm it up, now I've come home to it!

It's, from what I can see, about 2 foot long and seems perfectly fine apart from its left eye. I can't work out quite what's wrong with it but it looks to me like severe retained shed. The skin around the eye is wrinkled and almost looks like a burn scar, and the eye itself almost looks like a scab. The other eye is perfectly bright pink and fine, but looks like a vet trip [:S]

Luckily for me, and the snake it seems, she says as long as it can live a happy life and doesn't need putting to sleep we can keep it. So, IMO, even though this poor ol' corn has obviously had a rough lot in life then was deemed worthless enough to be dumped along with some rubbish bags... hopefully will all turn out ok and I can give this snake a fresh start!

Will keep you guys posted on the progress, need to do emergancy repairs to the viv that my hamster destroyed (if any of you remember that [;]]) and buy some equipment, but he's currently sat in the box on a small heat mat I had from the Leo's. Fingers crossed [:s]

He's doing well atm. My mum ignored what I said and put a pinkie in with him this morning which he seems to find as appetising as I do. If he doesn't eat it by the time I go to work I'm gonna take it out and tell my mum to leave it until next weekend. She seems to think he'll keel over if he doesn't eat, but luckily a guy I work with works with the ferry ports around here and takes on confiscated snakes etc. He knows how to get them eating and if all else fails he can take it in until it is eating! It's who you know

Aww the poor thing. Its really lucky it was found by your brave mum and now has a good home. Why do people treat defensless animals like that. Why get it if they cant look after it or why not take it to a pet shop. Well i believe in khama, what goes around comes around.

Petshops won't take on animals if they don't look healthy enough, bad tempered or because they have no room. Just a shame no-one agree to take it for free working there and take it home to look after until they can sell it!

That's great ^^ You have to let your mum keep him though :o

thats true but any snake lover knows how bad the cold can be for snakes. With the weather we are having it was so lucky to be found when it was. People can be so cruel.

Apparently the eye was like dead underneath, so just had sorta become part of the skin that came off. The socket is looking really good atm, we have this antibiotic stuff to put on twice a day. He hasn't eaten yet but I'm gonna leave him a week to get a bit hungrier etc. then try with a pinkie. He's a little underweight so I';m gonna do one pinkie a week for a few weeks, then move up to two then fuzzies etc. Gradual weight gain (Y)

Doing well so far ^_^

I know this propaply shows my lack of maturity but.. Hahahahahaha (not at the poor snaky, just at the one eyed snake comment) Sorry I hand my head in shame.

I like hearing about happy endings like this!!
Hiss was a rescue that was found in the road by some people and taken so a wildlife rescue where my friend volunteered. He was a bit skinny and had quite a few marks but a few feeds and sheds later he was looking much better. I think its sad that so many snakes (and other animals) get dumped. I'm glad hes got a new home with some one who will take good care of him.

If he hasnt got a name yet can you call him something like willy... because hes a one eyed snake!?

The thought of the eye coming out when the vet removed the retained shed gives me the heebie-jeebies.

But glad to hear snakey is going to be ok. It certainly landed lucky with your mum finding it and being brave enough to carry it home. My mum would have rum screaming in the opposite direction. Lol!

Well done to both you and your mum for saving and giving such a great home to this little guy.

Sorry to ask the gruesome questions I'm just curious lol. Did the eye like literally fall out or was it still kinda attached when the vet tried to peel the skin? I just have a rather odd image off the eye just falling out onto the table at the moment *_*

Well done to you both I can never understand why people dump lovely animals but it is always heart warming to know there are lots of good people out there willing to help so well done again to you both.

Poor thing.
I wonder if he was dumped because the last owner couldn't be bothered to fix the eye problem.

One of my corns only has one eye, she gets on fine without it. Is a better feeder and much more active then my two eyed corn actually. Sometimes it seems like she has trouble judging distances but other then that its all good.

bless him. well im glad he's happy and healthy anyway! grats to you all and good luck! :)
PunkAsF82 Posted - 29/01/2011 : 13:12:08
Yeh the eye was dead underneath and just came out of the socket as she removed the skin. Must have been there for a loooooong time!
Sta~ple Posted - 28/01/2011 : 22:39:00
The eye came put with the skin? I hope he gets better soon bless the guy :)
PunkAsF82 Posted - 28/01/2011 : 17:05:05
Well! Good news from the vets He's healthy and happy and no reason to put it down. The eye drops worked and the skin came off.

Unfortunately, the eye underneath wasn't viable and just came out with the skin. So one eyed snake

But he's now in his nice new viv (thanks for the offer Benji ) and exploring like a mad thing. He's so docile and sweet considering the state he was in, doesn't seem to be effected in anyway from just having one eye! We're gonna try tempting him with a fuzzie later, if he won't take it I'm gonna leave him to settle in before I try again.

Thanks for the interest guys, will get some decent pics soon and keep you updated!

go your mum! my dads afraid of snakes and wouldn't come within a 100m of a snake! keep us informed about it and what sort of nasty person would just dump it in the rubbish like that or mabye it escaped from a viv near by? (as previously mentioned)

Either way your mum and you saved it hope u do keep him, he will be in safe hands!
Sta~ple Posted - 28/01/2011 : 14:15:18

ABSOLUTELY

Good to know there are still nice people out there willing to put their own fears aside to help. Well done to your Mum.
eeji Posted - 27/01/2011 : 21:37:33
rubbish = mice = food! I'll bet he's an escapee thats found a good source for munchies :)

He's a lucky fella, he's got somewhere nice and warm to live now! good luck with getting his eye cleared
Benji54 Posted - 27/01/2011 : 17:39:27
really glad you found him! lucky lil snake and mega kudos to ur mum too! :) i have a large glass viv you can have if u want it? its not ideal and i dont know how close you are but your welcome to it if it'll help!

just a thought: is it possible that maybe the snake escaped its viv and went into the rubbish (maybe smelled an old mouse that had been thrown away before bin taken out and no one realised)OR that the snake escaped/ was released and then, again, sought out the litter for some reason? not sure why im coming up with alternatives, i guess its just cause the thought of putting a live animal of any kind in the bin doesnt bear thinking about! :(

either way well done to you both for saving him and good luck! get well soon lil snake! (who should be called "stig" :) )
