Round the bf's house earlier, get a call from a slightly hysterical and rather scared sounding mother. She'd found a snake!
A road near our area is prone for rubbish dumping etc, but my mum sometimes (like once twice a month) walks past it with the dogs. Happened to walk there today and saw what she thought was a rubber snake. Nooope. She gave it a nudge with her foot and turns out to be a living breathing amel corn.
Had to get her to take her coat off, gently pick it up and wrap it up, all very difficult for her considering she never even held Tartan when I had her. Then she put it in a box in the airing cupboard for a little while to warm it up, now I've come home to it!
It's, from what I can see, about 2 foot long and seems perfectly fine apart from its left eye. I can't work out quite what's wrong with it but it looks to me like severe retained shed. The skin around the eye is wrinkled and almost looks like a burn scar, and the eye itself almost looks like a scab. The other eye is perfectly bright pink and fine, but looks like a vet trip [:S]
Luckily for me, and the snake it seems, she says as long as it can live a happy life and doesn't need putting to sleep we can keep it. So, IMO, even though this poor ol' corn has obviously had a rough lot in life then was deemed worthless enough to be dumped along with some rubbish bags... hopefully will all turn out ok and I can give this snake a fresh start!
Will keep you guys posted on the progress, need to do emergancy repairs to the viv that my hamster destroyed (if any of you remember that [;]]) and buy some equipment, but he's currently sat in the box on a small heat mat I had from the Leo's. Fingers crossed [:s] |

Well done mum. It cant have been easy for her to retrieve the snake with her fears and the dog to contend with. And congrats on the new addition. Hope the poor thing recovers from it's injury. At least it has found a nice caring home now |

Mum took him to the vets this morning as I was at college. Vet agreed with what I thought and said it's some severly retained shed, and reckons it was probably dumped because of it. We've been given viscotears to put on it once an hour until tomorrow morning then I have to take it back before college so she can try and pry it off!
Otherwise he seems like a lovely snake, just had him out to check and do the drops. Very docile if a little skitty, probs cause of the eye. The annoying thing is, the spare viv I thought I had in the garage has been chucked out by my uncle, so really very very not happy with him. Owes me a viv! |

Aww, bless you for taking in the snake and good on your mum for spotting him and catching him!
Hope the drops work so the eyecap comes off without too much trouble.
How can some people be so cruel as to throw a snake out with the rubbish?? Just awful :( |

really glad you found him! lucky lil snake and mega kudos to ur mum too! :) i have a large glass viv you can have if u want it? its not ideal and i dont know how close you are but your welcome to it if it'll help!
just a thought: is it possible that maybe the snake escaped its viv and went into the rubbish (maybe smelled an old mouse that had been thrown away before bin taken out and no one realised)OR that the snake escaped/ was released and then, again, sought out the litter for some reason? not sure why im coming up with alternatives, i guess its just cause the thought of putting a live animal of any kind in the bin doesnt bear thinking about! :(
either way well done to you both for saving him and good luck! get well soon lil snake! (who should be called "stig" :) ) |

Either way your mum and you saved it hope u do keep him, he will be in safe hands! |

Well! Good news from the vets He's healthy and happy and no reason to put it down. The eye drops worked and the skin came off.
Unfortunately, the eye underneath wasn't viable and just came out with the skin. So one eyed snake
But he's now in his nice new viv (thanks for the offer Benji ) and exploring like a mad thing. He's so docile and sweet considering the state he was in, doesn't seem to be effected in anyway from just having one eye! We're gonna try tempting him with a fuzzie later, if he won't take it I'm gonna leave him to settle in before I try again.
Thanks for the interest guys, will get some decent pics soon and keep you updated! |

Yeh the eye was dead underneath and just came out of the socket as she removed the skin. Must have been there for a loooooong time! |

Poor thing. I wonder if he was dumped because the last owner couldn't be bothered to fix the eye problem.
One of my corns only has one eye, she gets on fine without it. Is a better feeder and much more active then my two eyed corn actually. Sometimes it seems like she has trouble judging distances but other then that its all good. |

Sorry to ask the gruesome questions I'm just curious lol. Did the eye like literally fall out or was it still kinda attached when the vet tried to peel the skin? I just have a rather odd image off the eye just falling out onto the table at the moment *_* |
