I turn mine on when I get up in the morning and off when I go to bed in the evening. Nothing set routinely usually on about 7am and off around 11pm.... Just because It looks better no other reason its not a heat source

Some of my lights are on ish, 24 hours a day!! most snakes dont need lights though, only really bigger bodied tropical animals, and thats only really to prevent and nasty accidents involving the heatmat.
If you are trying to acheive a daylight cycle, then simply turn you light on when it gets light, and off when its dark, best light cycle around!!

light only goes on for a few hours a day just wanted to see what peoples general practice was

I have my light on 12 hours through the day. But thats my heat source so its kind of a requirement. As long as you dont keep it light through the night, they wont appreciate that and will become stressed.

My snakes don't have lights. Like gingerpony's they just have natural daylight through the windows.
