Posted - 24/08/2010 : 21:58:51 I have a question for you all. My corn is my first snake, love her to bits and have learnt so much since i got her in Nov 09, so much so that i am now addicted to snakes....i'm looking at getting a male hatchling next month to double my collection
But i now also fancy somethng a bit bigger, with a view to getting something next year. Now i love Royals, more chunky, about the right length etc...but reading on RFUK it seems a lot of people think they are boring in the fact that they dont do much. Now i'm not expecting it to do the washing up or anything like that but i do want a snake that i can interact with and handle fairly regularly.
So my question is, apart from a royal what would be another good choice of snake for me to get, chunkier/bigger than a corn, growing up to a max of about 7-8ft, i reckon would be still handle-able...still needs to have a good temperament, dont want it trying to eat me...?
Cheers

I'm completely in love with the Brazilian Rainbow Boa, such a beautiful snake....
From reading i know they get to around 5-6ft, but can anyone tell me how fat they get, will they be chunkier than an adult corn? |

Posted - 26/08/2010 : 17:42:53 Oooh they are gorgeous - was looking at dums on youtube - yes and Sinders - they were bred in Wakefield (where I live) read of breeder caught in floods 3 years ago (may it never happen again) they are another gorgeous snake ...
Oh, isn't it great, daydreaming and choosing??? |

Posted - 26/08/2010 : 17:19:05 BOAS!!! *drools*
i had a royal and it wasn't for me. but one mans rubbish is another man's treasure (so to speak!) and now Hannahb loves him lol
there are plenty of locality and dwarf boas available........the Sinder faze i have is only expected to grow to about 5ft. the Dums are my favourites and are gorgeous in every way but are technically medium-sized boas getting to 6ft for a male and potentially 8ft for a female (as a rough guide)
this is Marilyn (pic by magneticble)

she's a bit too big to do this now!

they're a seriously under-rated species and apart from the higher temps and larger viv their care is quite basic |

Posted - 25/08/2010 : 14:49:38 Yeah, my royal is already very much of a presence - I got him because I fancied a placid snake that would be like a miniature big snake, and he's nothing like the timid stressy creature I was led to expect. I DID give him a good month with half his viv covered, loads of hides, like you're supposed to, still didn't expect a bold gannet!
Corns and royals rule!
But, Whitedog, if you fancy something really unusual, what about a chocolate milksnake ...? |

Posted - 25/08/2010 : 12:41:10 Royals are not boring :p Our royals more micheivious than the corns! hes a delight, some days hes quite lazy others he wont stop! like last night whilst my fella sorted his rub out me and my mum where playing with him in the living room, i was putting him in a old box and playing peeka boo with him :p (yeah im sad but very funny to watch) he loves to climb and explore to, dont be put off royals from what a few people say, as for feeding, it depends on the snake, some can be notorious for non feeding and some can be pigs like our cecil, whos there waiting every sunday for his feed ;) hes never missed one even when shedding lol |

Posted - 25/08/2010 : 07:58:05 mike, many thanks for the reply, very informative, and those hogg babies are just too sweet. I think i can now safely rule out a bcc then, maybe a little large....ha ha.
So at the minute i'm looking into either....
Royal BCI of some sort hogg island boa Dumerils Boa
King snakes are gorgeous, and on RFUK there is someone selling some grey banded babies which are just stunning, but i would really like something a little bigger. I think i'll get a king in the future though.... |

Posted - 25/08/2010 : 00:58:08 Mike you meanie! Now I want one =[
I'm biased, my Royal was a sweetheart and I was heart broken when he passed away. Which is why I won't be getting another one either for a while, or ever. I'm seriously interested in the Boa's and Milksnakes though, they're all so pretty =] |

Posted - 24/08/2010 : 23:39:46 BCi is boa constrictor imperator, and bcc is boa constrictor constrictor, also known as true redtails. out of the 2, bcc's get the biggest, maxing out at about 12ft for a female, and very chunky. I have a 9.5ft surinam bcc and she is huge, not one to have out too often or for long periods because she is so heavy, i would guess, shes about 4 or 5 stone. Hogg islands are beautiful, i have 2, the female is maybe 6ft and fairly lean, shes not huge at all, the males, well, hes about 12 inches at the mo! http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10398
Those are my our baby hoggs, they have coloured up a bit since then though, and mostly eating too.
Bci wise, there are a lot to choose from, anything from 40 quid for a bog standard normal, to 6k for something like a moonglow, but most usually between 40 quid and 500 quid for things like albino anery and hypos, jungles too now. there are many localities too, hoggs, sonoran, amerali, etc.
Dumerils are a boa, but i dont think they are boa constrictor family, but am not sure on that. interstingly, anacondas are also boas!
It depends on what you want, royals will interact with you, but their appeal may be your turn off, they are not fast, and they are not mega active. boas can be faster, not cornsnake fast, but quite quick for a larger snake, and they will be active mostly. you just need to be sure that you are getting a well behaved one, the last thing you need is a 6ft boa that wants to chew your face off, that will tingle a bit!! a common bci is a very nice snake, all mine bar one are really well behaved, they eat very well and are very intelligent for snakes, and they know it! |

Harrison, yes, I meant Harrison
I'm pretty sure he's a normal - he was normal priced anyways
... I meant Lennon
Oh, sorry, Lennon - it's getting a bit hectic tonight!
He does look nice - my Shahi's a normal and I was told that he was 'high gold' but I'm sure he's not as golden as that. (Love him to bits whatever!) |

crikey, so many replies so fast, thanks all.
I do find that RFUK doesnt seem as friendly as here, but its good to widen my knowledge.
I've heard that royals can be a pain to feed too, thats another factor putting me off them....but they are soooo beautiful....
I always thought boa's grew huge, obviously i was mistaken. I'll look into that.....also whats the difference between bci and bcc?
What snake is a dumeril???? or is it its own type?
Are the hogg island boa's the ones with the funny ugly noses???
The ones with the funny noses are hognoses, I think. They have a forum on here too.
I know bci is boa constrictor imperator, don't know what a bcc is but you can soon google it, same with a dumeril, which is a really beautiful boa that doesn't grow too big. Don't know what prices these beasties go for.
Oh, it's fun deciding though! Good luck!
Ahh that'll be the ones.
Will definitly look at the boa forum....too many choices but a very nice choice....yeah, some of the morphs go for silly money. |
