Hello all.

I'm sure I'm presenting a problem that most snake owners will have come across at one point, (well I hope it's a common problem), but I thought it best to seek help anyway...

I've had my corn snake for roughly six years, and honestly, i'm not entirely sure of gender, so I shall refer to him as male ...

Suddenly, he has been acting strange;
Rubbing his head against the glass of his vivarium,
Acting incredibly lively (still as friendly as ever),
Opening his mouth slightly ajar,
Hasn't dropped significantly in weight,
He hasn't eaten for two months or more,
He occasionally sneezes and wheezes,
And he is drinking very often.

I have heard about these symptoms separately on other posts and forums, but not together it seems. I have also read that it could have something to do with brumation?

We have recently had a ridiculously cold winter, followed by a strangely warm period. Can this upset cycles and things he might go through?

Any questions are welcomed .

Thanks.

The opening of the mouth, sneezing and weezing suggests he has a Respiratory Infection. I would get him to a rep vet for a check up. It can be treated with antibiotics.

All the symptoms not in bold seem to point towards him being horny as it is breeding season....I have 2 males and they are acting exactly the same - rubbing their heads against the glass trying to escape, trashing their vivs, totally ignoring any food offered, not dropping much weight....

....BUT because of the symptoms in bold I would definitely suggest you do as Matty suggests as get him checked out.

A quote from http://www.qondio.com/common-diseases-in-snakes:

'Respiratory Infections

Signs of respiratory infections (RI) in snakes are often the same as those in people, wheezing, sneezing, mucus from the nose and mouth, breathing through the mouth instead of the nose, lethargy and being able to hear a rattling noise when holding the snake. It is possible to treat mild RI's at home by providinh a warm dry viv, raise the temperature to the higher end of the snakes natural range, thsi is like giving the snake an artificial fever to aid in fighting off germs, as with other disorders, isolate the snake, and keep stress to a minimum. Often this will be enough to fight off a mild RI, you might want to add a small amount of inhalant like baby vic in warm water to a jam jar with a pierced lid out of reach to the snake in the viv or outside the viv near the vent. Persistant cases of RI should be seen by a vet for a bacterial culture test and antibiotic treatment.'

The bits in bold correspond with your bold symptoms, but it also mentions the snake being lethargic which doesnt. I think it is probably something serious enough to get it checked out rather than risk your snake's health.

Ok, thanks for the help! :) I will definitely get *her* checker out (Turns out, She just laid at least one egg! I would very much assume that it is infertile, as she hasn't had contact with any other snakes.) I will still get her checked out to be safe. I will do what I can at home to treat her in the meanwhile.

Thanks again.

If its just laid one egg, dont take it to the vets yet. You are right in thinking the egg will be infertile. Give the snake a hide with damp spagnum moss and leave it be for a few days to see it if will pass all the eggs itself.

Ok, I'll do that. There's only one time I could possibly think she has had contact with another snake, is when she had escaped for about a month. We found her next door, crafty little serpent! But I also had another snake that escaped a white before, and there may have been an overlap. It seems rather far-fetched, and so I'm not keeping my hopes up. (although it would be nice!) They are awfully white, and quite large? There's about three now. I'll keep an eye on her for a while.

What exactly should I do about these eggs? O.o ... There are five eggs, all of which are a brilliant white colour, just under an inch long, and very well formed and plump it seems? She's wrapped around them quite well, so there could even be more. I have heard that they shouldn't be turned, but she is so tightly wrapped around them, I doubt it could be avoided. Will she be ok with them for a while? I'm worried about disturbing her too much.

Infertile eggs are normally yellow, so if they are a clean white colour, it is posisble that they are fertile. You may want to make an incubator and see if they hatch. Use the search button in the top right corner to find threads related to making an incubator.

I am afraid I have no experience with breeding but maybe this will help, these are some links for making an incubator -

If you could put photos up that would be good. There is guide for how to do that at the top of the photos section.
