Hi peeps.

I'm an owner of two Corn snakes called Kevin (Male sunglow) and Alice (Light Amber female).
My house mate was the first owner of Kevin (he called him crunchy), and about 3 months ago Kevin escaped
and went hibernating or that's what I though. And 3 weeks ago he made his appearance in the basement. My friend bought a bearded dragon due to the loss of the snake
and had no vivarium for him, my girlfriend fell in love with the snake and I decided I`ll take over the ownership of the snake, as I had a few snakes in the past.
And I bought Alice last week.

I love snakes, before I came to the UK I had seven different snakes and had to give them away. But now I'm happy to be back in the game again!
Thanks to your website and forms, me and my girlfriend are getting two Western hognose snakes the end of this month.

Hi Neels, it is really good that you have joined us! This is a great forum with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also get lots of fun and friendship . Whereabouts is it that you have come from? I may be totally embarrassing myself here but your name sounds South African? You are obviously not a newbie to snake keeping having had 7 in the past , so it is nice to have a new forum member with some experience to add.

I am not sure if you did this with your other snakes, but we always suggest you follow the one-week rule (it is more of a guide than a rule but worth adhering too!)...no handling or feeding for the first week to allow Alice to get over the stress of the move and for her to get used to the new smells and her new surroundings. This means just putting your hand in to change the water daily and straighten the substrate, so she can get used to your smell and not be threatened by you. I realise you probably know all this , but always think it is better to hear info twice or more rather than not at all.

I am sure that you have found that there is a large amount of conflicting information out there about corn keeping – on the internet, in books, etc. Even on here you will find that people have different opinions.....but at least you have a place to ask what you need to know and get the answers from experienced owners. Then you can decide what to do with what you are told.

I am not sure what it was like where you were, but unfortunately many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you . I know that I double check anything I am told on here. Remember that no question is regarded as a silly question .....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too! First place to look is in the top right hand corner of the screen where there is a search button...type in what you are worried about and see if you can find an answer. I know you can get swamped with different topics including what you are searching for, so it is a bit daunting but worth a look. If you cant find the answer you are looking for then dont hesitate to ask!

I dont know whether you do this, but I keep my own 'Snake Diaries', noting things like weight, length, feeding dates and what you feed, shedding dates, health problems, when you do full viv cleans. I know it seems a bit over the top but it is actually really helpful keeping track of your snake's health - I even note when Kellog and Silvesta poo !!

I am so glad to read that you have not broken the unwritten forum rule - pics as soon as possible! I will head over to have a look as soon as I can.

Kevin has quite a story behind him ....and it is always good to hear of an escaped snake being found so much later, fit and well - and you gained him in the process, what a result ! This site can be so dangerous as it really does get you into the corn addiction and I am not surprised you went ahead and got Alice....and have plans for hoggies in the future.

I look forward to getting to know you and your snakes better .

xxx

Wow Kellog you just made me feel right at home, thank you. And thanks for the all the info and tips. No need to feel embarrassed, your spot on I'm originally from South Africa :) This forum is an archive of info!! And can`t stop reading discussions, just to build up on knowledge. The only bad side of owning Kevin I have no history of the snake, meaning last shed, age , general health etc. Should I take him to the Vet just for a check up?

Yay, a South African! We are taking over....sort of! Skorps has South African connections, I lived there for 6 years and my twin and bro still live there, just outside of Johannesburg. Despite having moved here 20yrs ago my heart still beats to the African rhythm !

Glad you are learning so much from the forum. I doubt you need to take Kevin to the vets unless you are seeing any health problems. But I would definitely suggest you do as HannahB suggested....check him over closely for mites and injuries, keep him on kitchen roll instead of substrate for a bit just to make sure that mites arent incubating (much easier to spot them as black spots and blood spots on the kitchen roll, and if there are any injuries it is easier to stop them getting infected) and definitely keep him away from Alice....just for a few weeks, just to be on the safe side!
