hi all, i want to introduce myself,
my name is marie but also answer to maz.
i saw this site and thought that i would like to join now that i have my new baby corn snake called red cleopatra, she is nearly two years old but very small for her age, my step-son and his fiancee have two other corns and couldnt cope with red also and so the people they got her from said that all the babies were small for their age but my step son then found out later that she was selling them far too young, anyway they have beefed her up and i have had her nearly two weeks and we went to the pet shop and she knows the lady they gor red from and she suggested changing her from fluffs to rat pups because they have more meat on them and so i have been feeding her on two at a time and already she is filling out more, well chat real soon love marie and red cleopatra

Hi Maz and Red Cleopatra (what a lovely name), it is really good that you have joined us! This is a great forum with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also get lots of fun and friendship . It is sad that Red was sold too soon, this happens a lot, but at least she was lucky enough to land up with your step-son and finally with you. I am glad you have his support with learning how to look after Red....but it is nice to find out stuff for yourself as well !

Am sure you have already browsed the TCS site and forum, and found that it provides great information. The best place to look is http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm, it has lots of information for new snake owners. Also read this topic on 'Your 1st Snake' http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4133

You will find that there is a large amount of conflicting information out there about corn keeping – on the internet, in books, etc. Even on here you will find that people have different opinions.....but at least you have a place to ask what you need to know and get the answers from experienced owners. Then you can decide what to do with what you are told.

Unfortunately many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you , it sounds as though you are lucky that you have found one that can help you. I know that I double check anything I am told on here. Remember that no question is regarded as a silly question .....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too! First place to look is in the top right hand corner of the screen where there is a search button...type in what you are worried about and see if you can find an answer. I know you can get swamped with different topics including what you are searching for, so it is a bit daunting but worth a look. If you cant find the answer you are looking for then dont hesitate to ask!

I am not sure if you have thought of doing this, but I keep my own 'Snake Diaries', noting things like weight, length, feeding dates and what you feed, shedding dates, health problems. I know it seems a bit over the top but it is actually really helpful keeping track of your snake's health - I even note when Kellog and Silvesta poo !!

Unwritten forum rule - pics as soon as possible! This link will help - http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14

A warning - corn snakes are addictive.....and yes, the majority of us have stood up, said "hello my name is ****, I am addicted to corns........! And I am proud of it!" Your stepson already has 2 and you have just started down that corn path so be warned!!

I look forward to getting to know you better.

xxx

Hey welcome to the forum.

As i havn't seen your corn for myself i couldn't know wether it is underweight or not but although rats do have more meat they are also much higher in fat than mice. If you continue to feed your corn rats it is likely that it will become obese which can cause health problems.

Pics of your corn would help.

Welcome!

In agreement with Danny, It's much better to have a slightly smaller healthy snake than a large beefy unhealthy one!

looking forward to pics tho!! :D:D
