While we had Izzy out on Wednesday I managed to get some photos of a dint in her back that has been puzzling me. It's about 6" from her head. It feels like a dint in her spine but then there is a bump at the side of it that feels fatty. She seems happy enough, moves fine and ate fine last week. Just wondered if anyone had come across it before and what could have caused it.

A lump could be caused by a huge number of things. I would get it checked out by a rep vet.

I agree with Matty

It could be anything from an abscess to an injury. Always better to check these things out asap just in case it is quite serious.

Has she had any accidents lately? Fall? escape? handling malfunction?

We have only had her a couple of weeks so don't know if anything has happened before we got her. Definitely nothing since she has been with us. When i first had her out after her settling period I thought it had been due to the way she had been curled up in her hide which is a bit small for her. But I had a good check over of her when we had her out properly and I just thought it looked odd. I'v been looking on the net for any rep vets near me and I'm going to ring round some places on monday to see if they have someone in the know who can check her out.

Phoned my local vets and they mentioned a vets at Heanor that deals with reptiles. I also rang my local rep shop, explained the situation to the guy there and he says it sounds like a birth abnormality because of the dinted part of her spine. Said they wouldn't be able to do anything n said the closest rep vet would be in Leeds anyway. Won't be phoning them again lol. Anyway, didn't get chance to ring the place at Heanor but will try tomorrow afternoon. Gonna feed her as normal tonight since I won't be able to get to the vets before the end of the week anyway and will keep you all posted. Even if they can't do anything about it, it will set my mind at rest and stop me wondering. Just scared in case it's something serious n I have to tell Rhys.

Whereabouts are you? If you're down south, there is a freelance snake specialist that I go to.

Sprockett had a lump a year and a half ago, and when I took her to the vet, he said it was just a fat lump as I'd been feeding her a little too much, so it's not always a scary thing, but always good to get it checked.

Just a quick update. I took Izzy to the vets today. A lovely chap called Paul at Ambivets at Heanor, Derbyshire. He seems to think Izzy has a dip in her spine and the ribs have been pushed out to the side slightly. Probably caused by an injury he has received at some point. Paul had a good feel of him, asked lots of questions and seems to feel Izzy will be fine. It isn't restricting his movement or stopping him eating so should be fine. He seemed pretty happy with Izzy's condition, no mites, mouth fine, good weight.

Oh and yes we had Izzy probed and although the probe didn't go in as far as he expected, it went further than he would have expected for a female. So it seems we now have 2 male snakes with female names lol.

Popping and probeing are two different ways to sex snakes.

Popping can be done on young hatchlings and probeing on older snakes.

popping is where slight pressure is placed on a certain point near the vent and the reproductive organs come "pop" out.

Probeing is where sexing probes are inserted into the vent.

I don't know how to do it myself so don't know the ins and outs but it is very dangerous and should not be attempted unless you know what you are doing and are absolutely confident you know how to and that you can do it.

Most reptile shops will sex your snakes for you.
