reason I ask is using the wood chips they are constantly burying themselves and when I am having a clear round and checking for mess I am worried I am gonna poke/pull/prod/hurt one of them
Astro turf is suitable for corn snakes, but most people prefer aspen or wood chips. I use wood chips myself and yeah, it's a little annoying when they burrow in the substrate and you lose sight of them but since Spaghettino likes it..
I imagine astro turf to be quite annoying for snakes to live on. I imagine it to be quite spikey and scratchy on their bellies. If you want something they won't mess about with maybe get cage carpet.
The place I work used to use it, and it's horrible stuff. You need to change it constantly, so you always have to have spares to hand cut to size. It also absolutely STANK, even after being disinfected. At least with particulate substrates you can remove dirty parts and spot clean properly. Plus the snakes seem to enjoy burying. I'd never use it after experiencing it.
Astro curf and carpets are suitable but there are alot of flaws. One you can't just spot clean, you have to take them out and replace them whilst you was the others. theres also the fact that if your corns are burying its because they like it. All you have to do is be cautious when cleaing and i don't see much of a problem.
Im sure you could work around your snake burrowing.
just let your snakes burrow into it, they're displaying natural behaviour by hiding away. if you replace the substrate to stop them from doing so then you're removing one of their basic needs
