At a guess, with the snake being a egg eater i would say the woodpeckers trying to save its nest.

The woodpecker probably had eggs and a nest in the tree and was trying to protect them.

Wow, I love snakes but I really wanted to woodpecker to chase the snake off. It really kicks in the old maternal instincts. I'm not an aggressive person and I hate confrontation but if my child was being threatened there wouldn't be any lengths to which I wouldn't go to protect her. It's amazing that the same instinct is in much simpler creatures too. Poor mum.
