| Hi all, 1st time on here but just want to hi, im looking at getting my/our 1st corn snake in the next few weeks, have been looking at different setups but im leaning towards the exo terra 30x30x30, would this be big enough for a young corn, also the viv i have seen have 2 different setups 1 is a desert setup and the other a rainforest setup, which of these would be best, thanks all |

Neither really are 'best' for a corn, depending on the size of the corn a 30cm3 will possibly be to big.
I have 2 young hatchies in RUBS that are 10x8x4 inch (ish).
I'd recommend just having a look through the photo section and having a look at other peoples setups as well.
Have a look at the care sheet here: http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm That'll give you loads of info about snakes, plus have a browse through the forums, or stick something in the search (top right) to see what info you can gleam from threads that may have disappeared.

hi and welcome you come to the right place plenty of real helpful people just a great bunch, again i think that tank would be to big for hatchlings i have a hatchling in a 12" x 5" x 5" and s/he seems to be really happy in there on kitchen towel with small tub of water and 2 cardboard tubes as hides again welcome and hope you enjoy your stay

Hey welcome to the forum.
As has been said neither of them set ups are really ideal for corn snakes.
I have my 3 corns in Large Flat Faunariums for now, untill theya re big enough to move up into vivs. |

Welcome to the forum Colin! This is a great forum with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also get lots of fun and friendship . I am not sure how much information you already know about corn snake keeping, so sorry if I am repeating information you already know...but it is better heard twice than not at all.

I am not sure about whether you will have heard about The one-week rule (it is more of a guide than a rule but worth adhering too!)...no handling or feeding for the first week to allow your snake to get over the stress of the move and for it to get used to the new smells and its new surroundings. This means just putting your hand in to change the water daily and straighten the substrate, so it can get used to your smell and not be threatened by you. You mustnt worry about your corn not feeding for that week, corns are a lot hardier than we realise and going for a week without food will not do them any harm, no matter how small they are. You are rarely advised this in a lot of pet shops  but it is an important way of getting your snake to de-stress and feel safe with you. It is a hard week, very frustrating, but worth it for the snake's sake.
You will find that there is a large amount of conflicting information out there about corn keeping – on the internet, in books, etc. Even on here you will find that people have different opinions.....but at least you have a place to ask what you need to know and get the answers from experienced owners. Then you can decide what to do with what you are told.
It is great that you are doing your research into your corn before you get it, too many people just walk into a pet shop, buy and snake and whatever the pet shop says they need, walk out, get home and think - now what? I think you have had the answer you needed about what to get for your snake, and it is very sound advise. A usual guide that is suggested is that the maximum size of home for a snake is that their length = length + depth of home. Anything bigger would be regarded as too big.
Unfortunately, many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you  . I suggest you double check anything you have been told with us on here. Remember that no question is regarded as a silly question  .....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too! Kehhlyr has mentioned the first place to look, which is in the top right hand corner of the screen - a search button...type in what you are worried about and see if you can find an answer. I know you can get swamped with different topics including what you are searching for, so it is a bit daunting but worth a look. If you cant find the answer you are looking for then dont hesitate to ask!
When you get your snake I suggest you get as much info about it as possible....shedding history, feeding history etc. I keep my own 'Snake Diaries', noting things like weight, length, feeding dates and what you feed, shedding dates, health problems. I know it seems a bit over the top but it is actually really helpful keeping track of your snake's health - I even note when Kellog and Silvesta poo  !!
