I was talking with my best mate who may also be getting a corn snake and he asked why am i not getting a big tank for a hatchling..
(this is gonna sound pretty stupid buuut).. when he said that it raised the question, why cant hatchlings be in a descent sized tank straight away rather than an RUB?

Snakes are agrophobic (at least corn snakes are) and are scared of large spaces.

As they grow, then so can there surroundings.

A Hatchling in a big tank would be terrified and probably not eat etc.

Also its not that expensive to progress.

You need a mat and stat anyway.

This can be transferred from the small RUB he comes in, onto a 12" or 18" faun. The fauns are about 15 quid so not expensive.

These last untill the snake is about 2 feet or so.

Then vivs are only about 70 quid which would last its life.

Im guessing that in the wild they would stay in a very small space, small hole etc, under logs maybe? They wouldnt be venturing out though.

Also its very very different at your house than in the wild, being fed pre-killed food, being handled, same climate and weather etc.

Lots of different factors mate.

yeah thats kinda what i thought,
he just raised the question and it got me thinking
its not the money i was worried about, i saw a nice sized viv like 3x2 on offer for 99pounds and it includes EVERYTHING you need for your snake, was thinking of buying it and transferring it all to an RUB but just wanted to know how long it would be before i could set up the viv..

A 3x2 viv would be big enough for a 5 foot snake.

heres my experience for what its worth.....
I got colin from a rep dealer he was 30" long when I got him and he came with a three foot viv. Being an idiot I hadnt been on this site before i got him (wish i had) and i put him straight in.
Basically I didnt see him for about 4 weeks during which time he ate normally (although i would have to get him out and show him the food). He fine now (38" long) and he is out every night doing his snakey thing (unless he has just eaten) but if I had known then what I know now I would have started off with a smaller viv.
I am getting Candy this weekend (13" underdeveloped corn with health problems)and she is going in an RUB inside her new viv which is 24" untill she is big enough to take on the whole viv at which time i will just take off the lid of the rub and let her make her own way out or stay where she is.
My own rule of thumb is wherever possible I let the snake decide what it wants to do as with colin he comes out and his handled when he chooses too(comes up to the glass and loiters around the door till i open it lol). Just my opinion for what its worth
