Went stick hunting and found :

The larger one is 3', the smaller one 2'

For better idea of size.

Close-up to show a before/after sanding. The main branch has been sanded by hand, the smaller branch coming off it is still to be sanded.

When the sanding is finished they will sit in 10% bleach in the bath for a few hours and then a thorough rinse with the power shower. Don't think these will fit in the oven, so will be leant against radiators to dry.

Reckon I've saved ~£30 for a short stroll and some sanding

======================================================================

Ok, they've had 4 hours submerged in 10% bleach, been rinsed and are now drying:

Can really see the grain now and the colour change.

======================================================================

New 3' stick in viv:

Some more I've done:

I've been told by a shop that you should only use fruit tree wood as things like oak/ask etc are poisonous to snakes. Is this true? or is is just a few trees that you shouldn't use??

Great work on the wood! We did something similar with some drift wood we found for our Bearded Dragon and he loves it!! Looks good in their setups doesn't it!? :)

There are a couple of different woods you shouldnt use. Oak is ok, Pine is deffinitely one of the ones that is poisonous, also possibly beech and cedar, but i cant remember.

I think they are thinking of woods to be eaten, rodents and birds are safe really only on fruit tree banches as they will likely chew/beak sharpen etc on them. Im sure snakes don't eat trees and so a wider range of woods would be safe.

Its not about eating the tree its like a certain wood is toxic to the snake and could end up killing the poor lil thing

As hiper has said its not a case of the snake eating the wood, certain woods are just toxic to snakes.

So if you use wood chips in your viv make sure you get ones that are non toxic to snakes.

As above, the sap in Pine and similar wood contains Phenols which can kill. If you buy cheap wood shavings it will usually be Pine based as Pine is cheap as it grows so quickly compared to hard woods.

basically till it's dry lol, a small thin branch will be quite quick compared to a thicker one, it also depends where it's left and how warm that place is

If the weather is nice, I tend to leave mine in the greenhouse for a couple weeks.
It also depends on the wood as well, hydrangea wood seems to take months to dry out completey.

I was wondering, are oak branches safe to use?

And also, if I brought some bamboo, would I still need to treat it like this?
