Hi everyone.

I too have just become the proud keeper of my first snake (Eugene is his name). I've had him for about 2 weeks now and i believe he is a few months old, and is about 1.5 foot in length.

Since i'm new at this i'm just wondering if anyone has any starter tips for me??

Cheers

Hi and welcome!

There's an excellent care sheet on this site, the link is http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm

This should answer any questions you may have, but if you have any more feel free to ask! No question is too silly when it comes to animal care!

You're right about the pics - unwritten forum rule is that we see pics ASAP!

Hey Shaka, welcoome to the forum, tis a great place to be. Well there are loads of peeps on here with loads more experience than I, so the only thing I can say is....... research all you can, no matter how many books you read you will always find more snippets of useful info. Listen to the opinions of as many different people as you can then go with what seems is the right way. This is what I do with all the animals in my care and I haven't had any issues yet (fingers crossed).

Welcome to the forum Shaka (love the name)! You will find that this is a great place with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also gets lots of fun and friendship as a bonus. Not sure how much advice you were given when you got Eugene, so I am sorry if I am repeating stuff you already know but it is better heard twice than not at all! I would advise the following:

1. Not sure if you were told this when you got Eugene...I hope you were! He needs to have a one-week hands off period when you first get him, which is very frustrating but vital. You need to leave him for a week to get over the stress of moving to your house and let him settle into his new surroundings by leaving him without handling or feeding for a week. Only put your hand in daily to change water and straighten substrate, that way he gets used to your smell. If you havent done this it might be a good idea to do it now, to ensure that he settles in stress-free.

2. Glad you found the Care Sheet that Kizzig suggested helpful. Also read this topic on 'Your 1st Snake' http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4133

3. As already said, no question asked on this forum is a silly question.....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too!

4. I hope you got as much info on Eugene when you got him....shedding history, feeding history etc. Start your own 'Snake Diary', noting things like weight, length, feeding dates and what you feed, shedding dates, health problems. I know it seems a bit over the top but it is actually really helpful keeping track of your snake's health - I even note when Kellog poos!

5. Unwritten forum rule (as already mentioned a few times!) - pics as soon as possible!

But I must warn you - Keeping corns is very addictive....most of us start out with one and the lucky ones move on from there while those of us who are not so lucky try to contain our jealousy!!

xxx
