We will be rehoming a couple of red eared sliders/terrapins tomorrow, they're called Sam and Ella.
Really looking forward to bringing them home!
Does anyone else keep these little guys? |

I keep other turtles, used to keep sliders a few years back, but purely to keep my guppy population down.
What size are they? If you know yet. Also have they been regularly handled? Although you're not technically supposed to handle turtles, a huge amount of Terrapins can become aggressive if they don't have regular interaction with people.

They're fully grown, approx 14 - 15 years old and they are handled regularly, and seem to really enjoy being handled! The male can be a little aggressive sometimes, but the female is sound.
We're really looking forward to collecting them this evening! We've never kept terrapins before, but we've done a lot of reading on their care and housing/lighting requirements.
Are there any little "quirks" we should be aware of?

Just don't purposefully put your finger in front of their heads. To them it's an invite to be bitten.
That is coming from some with experience, and turtle bites hurt like you wouldn't believe sometimes. |

| Lol, will keep that in mind! It's probably to do with a hand/food association, we've heard that they can give quite a nip and don't like to let go once they've got you... ouch! |

| I used to keep some a while back! I seriously echo the don't wave a finger in front of them (I read an article a long time ago saying that it is not unheard of for a fully grown terrapin to be able to remove a human finger; can't make any claims to the validity of this since I never tried it)! Spent a lot of time with mine but they still loved to hiss and snap! Lot of cleaning involved too and they can stink! Still, wicked creatures and a joy to watch! |

Sam and Ella have arrived! They're lovely! They're both 17 years old and are quite active (and very strong!). We'll get some pictures up over the weekend and will need to update the signature too...
We spent all last night worrying about them, as you do with a new pet! We haven't seen them basking yet, but that's probably because they're feeling a bit shy in their new home. Hopefully they'll be basking over the next couple of days when they're feeling a bit more confident in their new habitat (which looks a bit bare at the moment, but will soon be added to!) |
