Hi everyone,

Had a scare because my 3 year old has been confirmed with Salmonella (not sure of spelling). She hasn't handled Slinky for over 2 weeks and we always clean our hands thoroughly. The environmental health seem to think it could have came from my snake. Is there any way to check?

they could do a swab of the snake/enclosure....... but to be perfectly honest it's more like with snakes requiring a humid environment, and even then it would be rare.........

maybe they're just clutching at straws?

hope your little girl is ok soon

As all of the above have stated, it does sound like they are trying to blame the snake as an easy option. I used to play with Salmonella on a regular basis at uni during microbiology practicals and never fell ill with it. If you and your daughter follow handwashing procedure before and after handling snakey then I find it hard to swallow that snakey is the cause. Do you follow the same procedure before and after handling the feeder rodents? Also, where abouts are you in the UK? A couple of other cases have popped up on RFUK within the last week. My Forensic mind is starting to think. Hmmmm **Rubs chin with thumb and forefinger**

Hope Bubba is not too poorly, there is a small chance it's down to snakey but if your careful about hand washing it's unlikley. Salmonella is alot more commen than people realise it's just not always diognosed, could have come from anywhere but big people are often not as ill as little people so it's let go as a dodgy pint or Keebab guts. Get snakey to an exotics vet for tests if you are worried - gotta be worth the expence to put your mind at rest if nothing else.

Also, what tests did they do in order to be so sure that it's salmonella?

Thanks everyone,

Its def Salmonella as she was taken to hospital and they tested everything from blood to stools.

I'm really very careful to wash her hands after she holds Slinky and she never feeds her. She hasn't held her in over 2 weeks either.

My gut tells me she has caught it from food or poor hygiene in nursery (all 3 year olds are pretty disgusting).

Erin is feeling much better but has to provide 2 clear tests before she can go back to nursery and me back to work.

Thanks again for all the advice everyone!!

I don't think i'm going to get the snake tested. I think it would just upset me if it came back positive.

I have no intention of giving up Slinky so think i'm better just making sure that Erin is nowhere near at feeding and cleaning for time being and I'll be extra careful to clean her hands for her after handling.

She is much better and now running me ragged!!!

Thanks Again.

Glad she's on the mend. I wouldn't bother getting Slinky tested either. It's almost a foregone conclusion that Slinky will be carrying it because of diet and the natural corn behaviour of doing a full blown dirty protest every time they poo. What handwash are you using and do you use an alcohol based hand rub after washing?

I use dettol anti bac soap and then a alcohol hand sanatiser that you don't wash off. Not sure if there are any other things I should be doing.

Looks like you are doing everything that we did for clean-up and that was after playing with Staph A, E. coli, Strep and various other assorted nasties. The nursery sounds like the favourite to me at the moment. Have any other kids been absent from there with "tummy ache" recently? Might be worth looking into.
