Well I never anticipated becoming a corn snake owner but on Friday morning one of my cats, Ferbie, discovered this little fella in my garage.

I was more than surprised I can tell you!

Have to be honest and admit to never seeing a wild snake in the UK before and although I knew he wasn't a grass snake or Adder, had no idea what species he was, where he'd come from or whether he was venomous or not. The local vet couldn't identify him, but having posted him up on a few of my motorcycle forums it became apparent he was indeed a juvenile corny.

Well, we've decided to keep him as releasing him into the wild would almost certainly result in his demise so today we popped into a local reptile shop and bought a little tupperware type vivarium suitable for baby snakes and one of those heat pads.

I've made a little hide from my iphone box and he seems to be happy.

We haven't fed him yet... as the shop owner advised he should settle in for a few days first.

Well... we're looking forward to caring for him and watching him grow.

Cheers all!

Hiya, and welcome to the forum.

A thermostat is essential, to stop snakie overheating. Make sure the heat mat only covers the bottom 3rd of the viv/faun as well.

Has it got slight damage to the head? can't quite make it out from the pic. Congrats as well on passing the unofficial test of posting piccys as soon as, we LOVE to see pics.

Well done for not just letting him go, or for not just spanging it with a shovel or something either.

Did the vets recommend you bring it to a rep shop to identify?

Hi Kehhlyr

No he didn't... just said 'thanks for bringing it in, that was interesting'. Great, eh?

I think what looks like a mark in the photo is actually a bit of fluff or cobweb he picked up while in my garage – he looks in pretty good shape.

... the mat is only covering a 1/3 of his box, but there's no thermostat fitted [standard mat bought today from a reptile shop]

I'll post up a few more pics tomorra. Gonna see what he's up to and pop off to bed. Cheers for the welcome!

Oh... I've place his hide half over the mat & he seems to prefer sitting coiled up to the one side not over the heat source... mind you with the current heatwave we've been experiencing recently I recon it's probably warm enough anyway... 31.5ºC today!

How cute!

Have you popped him in the paper to see if someone is missing him first?

That looks fine, though another hide near the waterbowl and some scrunched up newspaper thrown in there will help it feel more secure.

Its great to hear about someone taking a snake in, instead of beating it to death as soon as they see it!

I'll do that straight away...

the wife's just popped out to do some shopping and I've asked her to stop by and pick up some pinkies... it can't hurt can it, as I guess he hasn't had a meal since popping his shell.

... I'm really looking forward seeing him grow so I can house him in a proper viv...

Cheers again guys!

I love the name 'kellog' but there seem to be quite a few on here by that one... Crispin, or Crispy for short is topping the charts at the moment.

... I really do feel quite privileged to've found him! They're fascinating creatures.

Something remarkable happened yesterday...

I handled him for the first time. It was the first time I've ever handled a snake. He was very active at around 7pm and moved from hand to hand & up my arm. He was totally non-aggressive and didn't appear phased at all... infact I think he quite enjoyed it!

... but this is the remarkable bit... as I lowered him back into his viv... I attempted to show him his water bowl and coiled just above it.. he took at least 12 or so gulps while still in my hand! I could see his little cheeks pulsating with every gulp. How cool is that! The guy in the reptile shop said he'd only ever seen his snakes drink on three occasions, and judging from the few posts on here I think it's quite rare to witness this... let alone while still held in one's hand. I have a feeling we're off to a good start.

... I got the inkling he was actually quite hungry, so today I popped back to the shop and bought some pinkies.

We've just had him out the box for another brief fondling session

and I fed him his first pinkie. There was no hesitation... he went straight for it [striking, but not coiling unduely]

He has now just got the whole pinkie past his jaws! Its incredible seeings its much wider than his little girth...

WOW... I'm really pleased he's eating & drinking.

wow, looks like youre taking care of him.
So have you tried to track the owners? I'd imagine as he's so small that he might be an escapee.
I'd post a note through your neighbors door.

Have you had him sexed? It might be a she based on the tapering of the tail but that's not an accurate method.
Also, I think he's a normal morph but I'm rubbish at that kind of thing.
