My Habistat 100 thermostat and 11x11" heat pad arrived today and I've been playing. I was intending on having it set up for my hatchlings as in the photo. Two plastic boxes which will have air holes drilled in the sides and lids, each sitting on half of the heat pad. I've angled them since they don't fit end to end. Was keeping them in the vivarium to keep them safe from my cats. Also there will be hides etc. Just wanted to show the positioning. It's a 60cm viv and the boxes measure 30x23x10cm. Any opinions please and please be gentle as I'm completely new to this. Thank you. #128522;

It's a nice one, it doesn't matter at all if the tubs are angled.
Just a couple of tips: you might be planning this anyway, but I'd put the mat and stat cables through the cable holes of the Viv. That way you can shut the door, which will definitely keep the kitty out ( knowing my cat, if the door was open, she'd be in there ), and if you plug any gaps, it will also add security - should the hatchlings manage to escape the tub, they will still be safely inside the Viv. It might also keep it warmer.
I'd also get two digital thermometers at least, then you can monitor the warm spot in each tub, just in case one side of mat gets warmer than the other, and one thermometer for the cool side, too.
I found using kitchen towel ( white, unprinted ) as their first bedding works really well. It has a couple of advantages: you can feed the snakes in their tubs, without risking they'd swallow substrate, which is good when they are first settling in, and you don't want to stress them by handling/ moving them when feeding.
You can see any poop straight away ( believe me, it's sometimes almost impossible to find a tiny hatchling poop in aspen ), you can see if there are any problems/ abnormalities with the poop, and it's really easy and cheap to clean - you just change the towel.
Should they have mites ( hopefully not :-). ) they would be really easy to see on the white paper towel. Once they are a bit bigger, you know they are pooping ok, and they are used to handling, you can change to substrate.
Hides- you don't need to spend money, they will grow out of these pretty fast - so a toilet roll tube, cut in half to make a tunnel works well, or you can attach one to the lid and make a swing :-). Again, cheap, easily replaced, clean, you can make as many as you like. Or - any boxes will do ( not soap or anything scented or chemical ) - the individual cereal boxes for kids are good, some people on here even made hides from Lego! Beware of anything with small holes, snakes can try to crawl through and get stuck - any holes need to be wide enough for them to crawl through with a mouse in their tummy and a room to spare :-)

I'd angled to allow for warm and cool ends but now you mention it, I could level them up and still have both. I'd decided on kitchen towel for the same reasons you mentioned too. I got my babies today and they seem happy in their new homes up to now. #128512; |
