Well, first time I've had a snake regurge...

Fed little Squid 2 pinkies ( not for the first time, he'd already had 2 several times, and is 19 g now ) - and 3 days later found one fresh poop, and a freshly regurged pinkie.

The strangest thing was - the pinkie was in 2 pieces, back legs and tail, completely undigested , still white. The rest was covered in brown mess, but under that, the skin was still undigested - after 3 days inside!

I left him the obligatory 10 days- well, 13, as he went blue. He shed 2 days ago, perfect shed again, and was roaming madly, so later that day, I fed him, just 1 smallest pinkie. He bolted it down, it was gone within seconds, so now I'm keeping my fingers crossed he'll keep it down.

I think I know why he regurged- he only stayed on warm side for less than a day after that double feed, then buried himself on cold side, and the room temperature goes down to 18 C at night...

He's got a choice of temps - one warm hide is 28-29, the other 26-27, as the bottom of RUB is slightly arched, then he has a hide half on mat, half off, and cold side. He still insists in moving to cold side...

Now I'm so worried he'll regurge again, I've put most of the RUB on mat... I hope he's ok and not ill.

I'm sure it is a silly question, but if it was 3 days later could it have been poo even if not fully digested? You know, like sweetcorn

Wheels is camping in the cold end at the moment, I'm beginning to think he's trying to brumate himself - he refused his food last week, and I'm rather glad of it as he can't be keeping himself warm enough to digest.

Hope it goes well this week, keep us posted.

It did crossed my mind, as it was covered by brown stuff, very much like poop, but I can't imagine whole front 2/3 of pinkie, undigested, still complete with ears, legs and skin, etc., going through him ... He wouldn't have been physically able to poop it out.

Most likely, the brown goo was the mush from the other, digested pinkie... Plus, the hind end was definitely completely unchanged, and clean white.

Clever wheels, refusing to eat when he is in cold end... Baz tried to hibernate every winter, sleeping in cold end... But still ate... squid is silly enough to eat, then go to cold side...

I'm so sorry you had to go through that Razee . I'm not sure if you know but my 'little girl' went through phases of regurging for no reason that we could work out, so I know what it's like.

It certainly sounds as though it was a regurge. Did it smell really bad? Moving into the cool end may have been the reason. He may have digested the first pinkie while he was in his warm hide but moved before he'd fully digested the second. Having said that Asher stays in the cool side all the time at the moment and is digesting ok. I think one of Silvi's regurges was down to her staying in her cool side and, on a certain grumpy Scotsman's advice, I started removing the cool hide for the 48hrs after she ate. A couple of years down the line and I'm still doing that.

You did the right thing waiting for as long as you did and only giving Squid a small pinkie. I know you'll be holding your breath over the next 48hrs. A lot of regurges seem to be one-offs with no noticeable reason. I hope that is what its like with Squid.

Xxx

Never thought I'd hear the words clever and Wheels together in a sentence! Unfortunately, I don't think it is smarts at all. He often heads to the cool end straight after feeding, but I think he only does that so I can nag him and as soon as I've gone away he goes and warms himself properly to digest.

Actually, I defrosted the mouse at room temp this week for the first time and - after reading Foobs link in antoher thread - he could have refused because it was not at his preferred temp.

I hope this pinkie goes through the proper procedure and becomes possible to poop Never thought about the physical -er- limitations of passing undigested bits of mouse before........and I have to say I hope I never do again!

It's amazing how pleased you can be to see poo when you've got a snake that regurges .

Ok, update - last night ( very late, he's learning from the others, lol ), I found a tiny poop in Squidwood's tub, so it seems that this pinkie has gone through :-)

Not totally happy yet, not till he's had several meals without problems. I'll leave him a week now, then another single pinkie...then we're away, so he'll have 2 weeks gap in feeds... It's a shame, he's grown a lot, the shed he's just done (3rd with us ) looks massive, compared to his first one, but better safe than sorry, I suppose.

Kellog, it's nice to know about Silvi, and that she got over it, I always imagine the worst when something like that happens. Baz used to go straight to cold end after feeding sometimes, and I'd remove the cold hide, too... But she' s never regurged, it just took her longer to digest.

Trouble is, Squid insisted on being on cold side, even after I took out his cold roll, he'd just burry in the aspen, or simply lie in the open, and just wedge himself between RUB wall and water bowl, for security... Little so and so.
So, this time I've put most of the RUB on the mat, ( though that still gave him colder places, on top of aspen ), and kept checking the temperatures , just in case they are too high - but they were ok.

Wheels, sorry about the, erm, mental image of whole pinkie going through.... I nearly posted the pics of the regurge, that would have been worse.... Yuk. Lol.

I'm so glad you've found a little poo Razee . It sounds like you've got a good plan for the next few feeds. I know it's frustrating considering how well he's been doing but there's no rush and he'll keep growing.

With most snakes I would trust their instinct and leave them alone if they were in the cool hide, like I do with Asher. Silvi is slightly different because of her bad husbandry and laying slugs each year. I'm that bit more careful with her. My OH had some friends over last night and was talking about how long it's been since she last regurged. And I was sitting there thinking 'Please don't jinx it!' . She's so close to finally reaching the 400g mark and it's not something I ever want to go through again.

Kellog, have you ever had Silvi's poop tested? I'm planning on having Squid's tested, when he produces bit bigger ones. I heard that sometimes parasites can cause regurges, so I think it might be worth testing Squid. Normally, if the snake is well, they can control the parasites and not have too many problems, but if the immune system is weakened by something ( Squid being too cool ), the parasites can temporarily overbreed and take over. As Squid comes from a chain store, it's possible he could have something...

I had my adult ones tested some time ago, when Baz did a strange poop. She was healthy otherwise, never regurged, and her next poop was normal, but was found to have flagellates. Whilst Twid, who does horrendous and nasty poops, and has nowhere near as good muscle tone, was completely clear.

I used to have a vet locally, who'd do an "in house flotation test", cost me less than £10 a go... Unfortunately, he's moved away, so I will have to send a sample off to the labs...

I agree about a 'like' button Silverwings. I'd 'like' both yours and SBB's cool Squids .

I did get Silvi's poo tested Razee. I used http://www.palsvetlab.co.uk/ and they were great (and not massively expensive). Tests came back clear.

How long have you had Squid now?

Loving the Cool Squidwood pictures, I could print them out, and stick them to his tub, to help him get better :-)

On more serious note- I'm pretty sure I found possible cause of temperature problem. I got him new, Habistat pulse stat - and the probes are slightly thicker than Microclimate pulse - so I broke my own rule to always have the probe where the snake is, and kept the probes outside the RUB, on the heatmat.

At night, with heating off, the room temps drop down. Although the probe is touching the mat, the air is so cool, it makes the probe read slightly lower, so it results in higher mat temperature - I noticed it climbed to 30.9 C whilst the tub cold side went down to 17 C! I managed to solve that now, by putting a tiny light bit of cardboard partially over the probe - but it's not ideal. So, one more meal ( with the heating left on overnight ) and Squid will be moving to Monkfiled Viv, with probe inside...

Kellog, sorry if I "stated the obvious" with the poop testing... I've had Squid since end of September, I think I brought him home on 27th Sept.

Don't be daft Razze. If Squid had regurged again I would have suggested the same to you.

How's the temperature behaving?
