Hello Alll,
I'm new to the forum and Facebook group, but I've been reading up on both for a couple of weeks now and gleaning as much information as I can. My daughter has a desire to own a corn snake and so do I, I've just got to convince the OH that it's a good idea :0
I used to own a pair of leopard gheckos named Betty and Wilma about ten or so years ago, but they have since moved onto a better place.
Hopefully I'll bump into some of you when asking questions etc (although I have read up a lot so far so they are getting fewer!)
I would like to say whoever thought of the name Kellog was a genius, the whole family groaned a smile at Kellog the Crunchynut Corn Snake (my cereal of choice btw) :D

Hi Nathan. I'm glad you've decided to come out of the shadows and join us officially . As you'll have seen, this is a great forum with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also get lots of fun and friendship .
I'm so glad you're doing your research before getting your daughter her corn . Unfortunately a lot of people don't . If you can't find what you want to know using the search option, then please don't hesitate to ask. We don't bite, much . In the top right corner, by the search option, is 'Active topics'. You can use that to access those threads that have been commented on since you last logged in.
Pics are compulsory, of course. Hopefully this will help - How to post images using Photobucket , although it is playing up at the moment . You will need to look at this as well Photobucket update . You can also post pics via Facebook. Select the IMG option (top of box, yellow and looks like a mountain), then just right click on the Facebook photo, select copy URL and add them between the [img] tags. Hopefully that makes sense !
A word of warning, this won't be your last corn....they are addictive .

Hello and welcome to the forum :-)
Convincing your wife should be easy, once you've taken her to a friendly pet shop, or breeder, and shown her cute little hatchlings with massive eyes... and let her hold the hatchling of your choice ( your daughters choice,erm... ). She won't be able to resist :-) |

Welcome Foobs.
It took me a lot of years to be able to get a corn on my own...living with my parents isn't easy, but they relented in the end and I was able to get Inca, my 22 month out Anery Corn...and then of course, Aztec snuck in on Wednesday and completely surprised my parents as I only went into my local P@H for Inca's forever home lol.
But I'm sure that if you take your wife to either help your daughter make the choice of which hatchling they both like then it should be fine.
Again welcome to the forum and hope you enjoy it here.

Thanks for the welcome. Time for an update.
We went to our local exotic pet shop and had a look at a few of their corns (among others). The first one I fell in love with is an anery and if I've got my head around the vast number of morphs it's the one lacking the red colouration, very similar to the granite, but with a lighter base colour? My daughter liked it, but wouldn't hold it in the shop as she was afraid she would drop it and hurt it. Initially I thought that she had a slight phobia and it wasn't going to work out at all (more on that in a minute). I managed to hold it without any issue, apart from it trying constantly to go up my sleeve! She has since said that she prefers the other morphs that they had, of which one was a candy cane/albino (I haven't worked out the difference between the two) and the other was also similar, but had orange dots between the red saddles. We were then shown two other breeds, a Royal Python and a sand boa. I held the sand boa and although nice, it looks a bit stubby and after a bit of reading up on it I proved that as they only grow to 2.5 feet, but are quite fat - definitely not a patch on the corns. Going back to my other concerns about my daughter, she happily stood there for 15 minutes with the royal python in her hands, I admit that it was kind of plonked into her hands without giving her too much time to think about it by the store rep, but it dispelled my earlier concerns and if it wasn't for the price for the snake and the setup I think we would have walked away with it.
Anyway I've digressed a little, so Ill get back to the corns. Firstly I won on the OH front and she is OK with us getting one (unfortunately for her she doesn't know that I want more in the future ;)), she even then proceeded to tell me that in her school (pre school) they have regular visits by a reptile business, to introduce the children to different experiences. She has held all snakes that they have brought, all but a boa constrictor! So that's been the biggest hurdle overcome.
So the plan for this week is to visit a reptile specialist shop that I found about 10 miles from where we live. The first one we went to is a tropical fish centre first and a reptile centre second. They will suffice for food and housing supplies, but I'm not 100% convinced on their ability to give me sound advice for reptiles. My first suspicion was when I asked what morphs the have in stock and the answer I got was "Quite a few, but your better off coming in to take a look" (they only had four in total) and when asked in store about the ages they couldn't tell me anything else other than "A few months old". Where as the specialist has each morph along with any hets etc, when they were born who the parents are and the parents are mostly in store to view. They just appear to be more professional in their approach.
So far the only questions I have are, where to buy a cheap, but good small RUB and what size should I look at upgrading to the "forever home"? And our garage (or rather additional storage area as it's not big enough for a car!) is one of the planned places for housing the snake(s) providing I can get the temperature at the heat pad end of the house to the correct heated temp range. However, although it is humid down here in the SW, the temperature over the winter months drops to about 2 degrees Celsius in the garage, is this going to cause a problem? Obviously the ambient temperature in the box will be a lot higher, but I'm concerned that this may be too low for it/them.
Sorry for the length of the post and talking about other breeds along the way.

No need to apologise for the length of your post Nathan. I'm known for my essays, as I'm sure you've seen .
I'm so glad that you've 'won your OH round', although it sounds as though she is ahead of you where handling snakes is concerned . It's also great that you were able to allay your fears about your daughter not wanting to handle the corns. I can understand it. I've only taken on juveniles and adults so I'd be very nervous handling a little one. They can be fast and love to hide, as you found out.
It's good that you've found a place that you'd feel more comfortable buying from. If possible it's good to get the records of any snake you buy, including birth date, how many feeds they've had, sheds, etc. It is better to try and buy off the breeder rather than a middle man who isn't really that interested.
I can't help you with what size RUB to get and where to get it from because I've never had to use one but for a 'forever home' you are wanting a viv that's at least 3'. I know a lot of people use 4' vivs but all mine are in the 3' ones.
I would be concerned about the drop in temperature in the garage during winter. Ideally you don't want the cool end dropping below 16oC and you would also be making the mat work hard to keep the warm end within the range you need. I would suggest you get all the 'gear' and set it up at least a week before you get your snake. That way you can be sure everything is ok before bringing it home.

Well I snuck over to the specialist today and the contrast in knowledge and customer service are worlds apart. They have a selection of about 15 hatchlings and one yearling, mostly Anery or Candy Cane (which are my favourites) with the odd lavender and a Snow, which I didn't think I liked, but it was so cute with it's little white nose facing the front of the tub. The shop keeper was able to tell me all about the parents as he and the other owner were the breeders.
They do two setups which he said will last approximately 8 to 10 months, either a Perspex box that is exactly the same as the Exo Terra Faunarium, with a mat, 2 x thermometers, substrate, hides, some bark and a water bowl for £45/£70 with a mat stat. I thought was amazing value for money, considering that includes the price of the snake (which range between £25 and £30 on their own) and a months supply of pinkies. They also do a more visually appealing wooden (top opening) vivarium that is the same dimensions for £120/£145 with the stat plus the cost of the snake. I think because it's only going to spend about 6-8 months in it I'm going to get my daughter the cheaper option to save some money and then we can spend more on the big snake house.
The only problem is I might have to get one as well... :) |

If you get a rub, it is better to get a real rub, as it has the clips, if you just get a tub, get bulldog clips to keep from escape, even if the lid seems firm, dont trust it! |

Oh no I definitely wouldn't trust something that light weight, I've seen the little blighters escape very easily Scottishbluebird :)
I've just found one that will do for the first month or two and it's more than half the price of the normal RUBs, but looks very stable. The only downside I can see is that it isn't stackable, but that's not a feature that I am after for this purpose. I'm not going to post a link, but it's called a "5.5lt Allstore A4 Plastic Storage Box with Clip on Lid" It's larger than what they are housed in currently and will be a nice in-between size to keep them, uh, I mean it happy ;) |

Wow! That was an essay - but I know that I am pretty much like that as well lol.
Great to hear that your OH and daughter are now OK with snakes and interesting to read about your OH's experiences at school...wish school was like that for me lol.
Really good to read that you've started the planning and preparation needed for your new addition as well...looking forward to the updates (and of course...pics! lol) when you do get your new addition.

So far we have found another two places locally which I am going to visit tomorrow whilst my daughter is at school to see what they have available. We've also been to two different Pets at Home stores and there is one possible morph at each one that she has taken a fancy to. One of them came out of his hide the moment we put are faces up to the glass. He didn't seem to be scared at all and stayed there for a good 10-15 minutes looking at us.
So tomorrow should go quite quickly, but I can see Saturday morning (hopefully purchase day) and the following week are going to drag... |

Glad you are looking around as much as you are. I haven't ever bought my snakes from either specialist reptile places or bigger chain saws. I would guess you'd get more records from the previous than you would the latter. They aren't vital but it does help to know when the snake was born, what it is eating and when it was last fed, when it last shed, etc.
I'll look forward to the photos you sneakily take before the chosen one gets put away for its week of adjustment .

I was expecting the same Kellog, but if anything the chain saws () give as much information as the specialist and sometimes more as I found out today, where some snake morphs were in the wrong boxes! The Pets at Home snakes can be expensive, as they are all priced the same, but equally can be cheap if you get a good morph.
I've attached some images of the hatchlings that are under consideration, the only one not shown is a candy cane as he was hiding at the back of his box and I didn't want to disturb him. I'm not sure on the morphs of the top three.
