I have a 45"x18"x17" vivarium housed for my snake. I already have a heat matt that covers 1/3rd of the vivarium but I was wondering if I could add a heat lamp but only for day time use. I was thinking maybe a 40-60w bulb so the temp doesn't get too hot.

Shouldn't matter what bulb you use, it must be controlled with a thermostat, as all other heat sources should. personally I wouldn't bother with the bulb the mat will be adequate.

I'd never argue with the Grumpy Scotsman . Is your mat controlled by a thermostat and do you have a digital thermometer in the warm end? What is the temperature?
