Hi, we have had Clive for 2 weeks now and he seems to be the worlds most shy snake. for the first 2 days he was out and about checking out his new home i guess. since then we only ever see him when the room is in total darkness (which means we pretty much cannot see him anyway!!) now i know hatchlings are agoraphobic and pretty much convinced that everything is going to eat them but i would love to see him out and about. we handle him every day and he seems fine with this (once out of the viv) and he is eating fine as we have had 2 successful feeds. any ideas as to why our boy is so shy or is this normal for babies? The worried mum thing starts now!! lol
he is 12g approx 14" long in a 2' monkfield, warm end is 29 and cool end is 24. |

That is pretty much normal for a small hatchling - in nature, everything eats them, so the only ones to survive are the ones that hide most of the time. Snakes also have a very distinct personalities - my Baz is very shy, and she has never really tamed, whilst Seb, my re homed snake, is always out and about, and it doesn't bother him to sleep in the open.
Also - once they start hiding and become totally inactive, that can also mean they are going into shed mode, so that could be another reason - but if that's the case, you'll find he will be hiding all the time, day and night. You'd also notice his colours dulling and darkening, even before his eyes go blue, so you'd know.
Another reason why he could be a bit more cautious is that 2 foot viv can be a bit big for a tiny hatchling. It's not necessary a bad thing, it's just that with all that space, maybe he feels more like he's outside and is more careful. My newest hatchie is also 12 g, and lives in a sandwich tub now. As he gets bigger, he'll go to 12 l RUB, then a 2 foot Monkfield ( I love these vivs, btw ;-) )
Yours should be ok, as long as you have enough hides, and also a lot of cover for him to move " sheltered " and under cover, from one side to another. That will make him feel a bit safer, and might encourage him to come out more.
Your temperatures are fine, and he is eating, so I think you don't have to worry about him at all :-)

| Thanks Razee, I'll keep an eye on him when we have him out to handle tonight, I've not seen him since he fed (in the dark) on Wednesday. He has 2 hides, 2 pieces of cork bark (which he uses as hides) a branch, and several plastic plants so there is plenty of cover for him to get from one end to the other without being in the open as it were. We shall wait and see what the next few weeks bring!! |

| That sounds like a nice lot of cover, so maybe he's just being a typical hatchie, and will get bit bolder as he gets bigger :-) |

| if it makes you feel any better one of mine has only just started venturing out and he's 3 years old! as Razee says it's normal for them to be quite shy so try not to worry as hard as it is :-) |
