when your snake is asleep? Those lovely eyes could be staring at you or just slumbering.

It just occurred to me that they may be watching even while asleep...on some level, their own in-built guarding system.

Odd questions come to me on a Friday afternoon. I'll be digging him out in a little while so our four year old can get a visit before bedtime; usually he comes out after bedtime, so every now and then an early jaunt is needed. I just suddenly worried that I was crashing into some lovely snakey dream about a delicious mouse or really comfy hide

I had a great photo of Oscar 'sleeping' (I think!) - his eye was all droopy, like the pupil was looking down, and his wee face was squashed up against the glass LOL. No tongue flicking or moving at all...till I panicked and opened the other glass door to make sure he was ok lol....poor Oscar!

I'll try hunt it out at some point!

I don't have a clue and I've had snakes for years . Admittedly I often get mine out of their hides and I filled around in their vivs first to warn them I'm coming, so if they were asleep they'd be woken.

These might be interesting reads for you - http://animals.pawnation.com/snakes-sleep-eyelids-8321.html and http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13245

What Freddiesmum said. Sebastian often sleeps in full view, and Twid in his cave, but with his head in the entrance. First clue is the eyes - it looks like one or both of them are looking down, sometimes so much, that only half of pupil is visible. Sometimes each eye points ( is rolled ) in different direction. Often the head doesn't lie on top of the coils, but had slipped slightly sideways. No movement whatsoever,

You're most likely to see this, if your snake sleeps in the open, otherwise they just wake up as you start opening the viv, and even if they don't move, they're fully awake by the time you come to lift the hide.

lol want to see that pic!
It was funny when the cat and snake would have a staring contest, poor cat would never win as snake probably gave up and just fell asleep!

Damn his eyes (now, anyone not thinking of Marty Feldman's Igor is too young and needs to go watch Young Frankenstein soonest!), those red ones make it really difficult to spot his pupil when he isn't up close!

Thanks for all your thoughts and thanks for the links, Kellog, interesting stuff.

I guess that I do not need to worry about waking him - firstly I always fiddle about in the viv and speak to him before I move toward him; and secondly, I'm a clutz so the more I try to be quiet, the more likely I am to crash into the glass or side of the viv as I try to put my hand through the open door

Glad to report though that he seems to be more relaxed again and has reinstated my safe person tree status

Looking forward to seeing the photo of Oscar, Freddiesmum....and while you're here.....FIVE!!

That's a really interesting photo Freddiesmum. Can't say I've seen any of mine like that but then they don't tents to lie out in the open. Oscar is definitely a chilled out snake .
