A friend of mine has just bought 9 young chicks from a farm. However, they are not sexed and some will be male. They have offered these to me as snake food. I know feeding the occasional chic is fine but would you be happy to feed from this source.

My adult corns and tai beauty are fed exclusively on chicks. The nutritional content is comparative to mice and they love them (plus they are sooo cheap, scuse the pun. £6 for 50 at my local pet shop). The only issue I have is that my female, being quite slender, can't manage chicks if I don't cut the legs off at the thigh first. She gets stuck on the hips.
I had to start off some of my difficult feeding babies on chick thighs, I still give some of them the thighs I take off Luna's chicks as treats so they aren't wasted.

I think it depends how big your snakes are - the chicks are meant to be roughly the same size as XL mouse. I would love to try mine on chicks, just to give them a bit of change - but haven't dared yet, though 2 of mine can take XL mice now.

SilverWings, do you take the beak and the claws/ feet off?

Not for Diego or Aleron, they just poop them out. Obviously Luna doesn't have the feet. I've never actually seen a beak in their poop, but I don't really look too closely. The feet come out much the same as when they went in.

Feeding snakes chicks is fine Matthew but there can be issues, as Silverwings has mentioned. One of my snakes (Casper) is one a feeding schedule of a chick and then a rat alternate weeks. He is nearly 12yrs old and the reason for feeding him like this is that he doesn't keep weight on very well. His previous owner found that this was the best way. I gave Asher a chick for the first time after defrosting it for Casper forgetting he was blue. It was a seriously nerve-wracking half hour! Despite being much bigger than Casper, Asher seriously struggled to eat it. Looked like he had a golf ball stuck in his mouth. I won't be doing that again!

The chicks I buy are a day old. I certainly wouldn't consider offering anything older.

It's strange what you say about the feet Silverwings. I've never seen anything like that in Casper's poo. I think he must digest it all.

Xxx

OMG, that's it, I've decided. When I feed chicks in future, I'll definitely take the feet off - that would gross me out, finding a chicken feet in poop :-0

Yeah, but I don't have the fridge space for 200 :p O focurse it gets cheaper the more you buy, considering 50 fuzzy mice for my babies is £25, I think £6 for food for my adults is great :D
