Sadly Artemis my very young anery female died a week after I had got her. She had refused to eat anything and was hardly moving and I found her dead in her tank. It turns out her feeding pattern was very disturbed before I bought her which I was not made aware of at the time of sale so I am not happy with the shop who sold her to me. When I was going to take her to the vets the morning she died, I found a vet here who will deal with snakes after quite a search but she had passed away :-(
I then spent 6 weeks in hospital (long story that one)
My brother looked after Boris and did a splendid job considering he didn't like snakes before I got Boris. He fed him with no problems (though Boris has a rat pup one week as my brother got confused as to what was what but Boris hoovered it up apparently!)
I'm going to weigh him tomorrow as he was fed a medium mouse yesterday and I don't want to disturb him, and he also shed last night (sneaky bugger did it when I was in the bath, I'd been waiting for it) it was a perfect shed including his tail tip which I was relieved at, and so he looks all beautiful and shiny, again I'll get some pics tomorrow when he comes out for his exercise.
He seems to spend most of his time under the heatmat...is this normal? He comes out usually in the evening and vandalizes his viv- I've currently got quite a few loo rolls in there to add dimension and he must slither over these as there all over the place when I get up in the morning, but during daylight he's generally under the mat. The temps are fine, between 28-31 on the warm side (I've got a microclimate stat) and between 19-21 on the cool side, both measured by digital thermometers.
Thanks

Maybe he has a sore back and is using the heat mat to ease it ;) Seriously though, maybe the hide at that end isnt big enough or too big for him and he feels safer under the mat. Or he is just being a snake and being odd.
Sorry to hear about Artemis, I would bring the issue up with the shop about keeping and letting new owners have the records. I would also check to see if anyone else in your area has had any issues with that shop or it was a really unfortunate one off mistake. of a non feeder being sold on when she wasnt ready. |

He is sometimes in the coconut hide in the warm end or in the bark hide so I think he is just being weird!
I will ask around about the shop I got Artemis from, when I got Boris (from a different shop) I had all his records and I had none with her, which should have rang bells :-(

I'm so sorry to hear about Artemis . It's one reason we urge people looking into getting a snake to ask for all records about feeding, etc, although I've known occasions when they've been faked so it's not foolproof . As it's a little while ago now I'm not sure what action you can take but I don't like the idea of the shop getting away with it.
It sounds like Boris is doing really well and good on your brother for taking him on when you needed him to ! I do hope you've recovered from whatever landed you in hospital for such a long time.
As for him going under the heatmat, some snakes just seem to do that and it isn't an issue as long as the mat is statted and he can get out easily. Obviously it's not ideal. I know some people stick their mats down with aquarium sealant, which would solve the problem. Mine are covered with vinyl slate and they also have heavy hides on them, but then they are older snakes so have probably grown out of the 'hide away where I'm not supposed to' stage .
One tip, I weigh mine before each feed. If I didn't I'd forget and it can also almost guarantee that they are 'empty'. You'd be surprised what a difference a poo makes .

I do the same as Kellog. I have put Rosie's mat under a couple of large wall tiles. Seems to work fine. |
