Hi everyone!
I have just bought my very first (corn) snake and I'm totally excited! His name is Henry and I assume he's an adult as he's about 4ft long, very powerful with good muscle tone and is incredibly active when he's out and about. Lovely clear eyes, healthy and drinks well. His first feed isn't (with me) isn't until Saturday, but I will keep you posted about how he fairs. I'm also thinking about buying a rainbow boa once I've got a lot more experience under my belt and am planning on getting a custom built viv for him or her. I am also taking delivery of a Pokie Metallica tarantula on Friday and I'm VERY excited about that too! I look forward to being an active participant in this forum and will welcome any suggestions and advice you're happy to share! |

Thanks for the welcome everyone and for sure when she arrives I shall post some pics of her!
I also have a question. I bought my snake two days ago from a specialist shop and the guy was very helpful. BUT, I have some reservations about the size of the viv he's sold me. Henry is four foot at least but the viv is only about two foot long and just over a foot deep & high. He looks really cramped in there. He also never mentioned a thermometer, though from the FB page it's pretty evident I have to get one really to keep tabs on the temp (I shall be getting one today). I picked him up yesterday and he was FREEZING and lethagic, so I allowed him to snuggle into me until he was warm, then he really motored! |

Awww poor snake, he should be in a 3ft viv at least, if not a 4ft pet shops are so lousy sometimes :( Also, I'm betting they haven't sold you a thermostat? How are you heating the viv? whether by mat or bulb the heat should be controlled by a thermostat and if a bulb it should have a guard around it to stop the snake constricting the bulb and burning/cutting itself. |

I have a mat, but you're right he didn't sell me a thermostat, either. I was hoping to get those today but it was lousy weather and my mobility scooter battery was about to die, so I'm really hoping I can go and buy them tomorrow. The viv will have to wait for a couple of weeks as I just paid £65 just for the one I have now. It wasn't until I put him into the tank at home that I realised that is clearly wasn't big enough for him! I feel very guilty. |

Don't feel guilty it's not your fault at all - they are a lousy pet shop giving bad advice - as so often happens! |

Some pet shops.... anyway, welcome to the forum, to both you and your snake. Would love to see the pics, maybe even the spider pics, as long as there' a SPIDER warning first, so I can prepare :-) and not go into shock... |

Is there no chance of returning the viv as it was their fault for selling a small one? might be a chance since you want to buy a bigger one? If not, you could advertise it here or on the darkside (RFUK) |

SBB there is NO NEED to sell/return the viv as you well know - it will come in handy for the inevitable next one as long as it's a smaller snake :P :P :P
Only joking - it would be good to see if you could get a refund from the shop as it was an inappropriate size they sold you. |

Thanks guys! You're all so helpful! I'll keep the viv, as I do want another snake (already, hehe!). And Henry's gone into blue! I picked him up last night and saw he'd gone a grey colour and his eyes are cloudy, so I gently put him back into his hidey hole and he's curled up ready to shed. He's such a gentle boy. I'll have to use my iPod to get some pics as my camera is in repair right now. Once he's had his shed I'll get you some pics.
As for the spider...I'm still awaiting her. She went through a moult just prior to dispatch and obviously the spider's welfare must come first. But she's due this Friday. Pictures will follow, I promise!
I bought Henry as an adult. He's about 4.5 ft long and he's the most placid, gently snake I've had the pleasure to hold. No regrets! I assume his about 3-5 years old going on size, but please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I'm taking him to the vet in two weeks, so I can confirm his sex and make sure he's doing well.
You're a great bunch here and I look forward to contributing and showing off my pets! |
