So I need some advice guys! So this is actually about my royal but I guess the same goes. Basicaly I thought my royal Cuthbert had mites, as I saw a couple of little black bugs crawling around in his viv when I cleaned him out a few days ago, and when I say a couple I mean I literally saw about 5 of these little things. So I cleaned out his viv as usual and used boiling water so soak all the hides and baked all bark hides. Put him back in on kitchen roll and minimal hides/decor. Then ordered some Ardap.
Over the next few days whilst waiting for my Ardap, I kept checking on him regularly along with Trevor my corn just in case he had them too (which he doesn't seem to) I was expecting to see more mites, but none...at all, not a single one. Theres definitely none on him either, so I'm confused, were these even mites I saw? There's none on either snake and I havn't seen anymoe since, It's been about 4 days.
I plan on treating them both anyway as my Ardap came today. But I get Cuthbert out and the little bugger is blue! So I don't really want to start the treatment just yet, as I was planning on keeping both snakes out of their vivs until tomorrow due to the fumes the spray will create. I can't keep Cuthbert out his viv with no heat whilst in blue as I need to keep his viv nice and humid for him to shed properly as he's a terrible shedder. Also I don't want to stress him out too much whilst in blue by putting him in a smaller tub for a day in a different room. So basically what I'm asking is, do you think these were even mites I saw? Will it be ok to wait until Cuthbert sheds before I start treatment on both snakes?
Sorry for the essay and if this seems like a silly question, Thank you for reading. |

IF they are mites then they may well cause the snake to shed early, so I would go ahead and start, that way they are less likely to be able to jump straight back onto him after he sheds. However if they were in the substrate then sounds more like they would be something else, such as springtails? When we had mites we saw them on the snake or in the water bowl, and only ever a couple on the substrate. Check in that little tiny groove under the chin if you can - they seem to really like it there, and we even spotted one in poor Arti's heat pit once, grrrrr little nasties, I hate them! |

I would not treat for mites unless I was 100% sure they had them. There is no need for chemical warfare unless you are sure. If you haven't seen any since then they were probably something else, as SB said the water bowl is an easy place to see mites as they usually sit in their water bowl when they have mites to get rid of them. Hopefully he doesn't have them as they are horrible little things but if he does don't panic as they can be gotten rid of relatively easily. |
