Hi all. My son's little Carolina has just shed for the first time since he's been with us so I thought I'd upload a few pictures that I took on my phone this evening.
He didn't eat last Saturday, which we weren't surprised about seeing as he was still a bit 'blue'. When he shed on Tuesday we thought we'd take the opportunity to try and change his feeding day to a Thursday, (theory being that our son could then handle him more at weekends - normal feeding day is Saturday so he has to leave him alone on Sundays), but he wasn't interested. Hopefully no big deal, we will just try him Saturday again as he gets handled for a bit most days anyway.
He looks lovely and bright and aside from the little feeding blip, he seems to be doing great

Thanks. He is on pinkies still. The guy in the shop told us they work to a 12 week rule; if they eat well for 12 weeks then they move them up as size. He was eating well at the shop and was due to go to 2 pinkies the week we got him. We got him on the Friday and he did feed on the Saturday but only one. Same again the next week - straight onto one but not interested in the second. Then last week he didn't eat as he was in blue.
Tried him on a couple on Thursday (wanted to try to change his feeding day to a Thursday as that way my son could handle him more at weekends) but again he wasn't interested.
So I will try him again today. Not too worried at this stage as he seemed like a good eater the first couple of weeks and he has she'd so hopefully he'll switch back on this afternoon. |

He 's a little sweetie, nice pics.
It's not so much a 12 week rule - it's more you move them up, when they need it. When they swallow the food, and it's settled down in their stomach, have a look, if it still leaves a visible bump. If it does, they're on the right size of prey, if it doesn't, or the lump is only barely recognizable ( like you wouldn't notice, unless you know it's there ), it's time to move up :-) |

As Razee said, you don't just change their food every 12 weeks (but I'm sure you would have soon realised this ;) ). The reason I asked what you are feeding is because most people feed single pinks every 5 days, then double pinks every 6, fluffs/fuzzies every 6, then smalls every 7. I suspected the pet shop may have only been feeding weekly as they often do, but personally I would increase the feeding frequency that little bit. |

Ok, thanks guys. I figured that if the 12 week rule worked then was more due to the fact that he would have grown and been ready for the next size by the 12 weeks anyway, if you see what I mean.
He has eaten today, just the one. Funny actually, I defrosted 2 pinkies and straight away one of them looked quite large. I put that in first and he switched right on but did nothing more than bump it about a bit. After about 20 mins (I left him to it) I put the second (smaller one) in the tub too and he was straight onto it and ate it right away. It was like he sized the first one up and decided it was too big for him or something.
I will take your advice and start a 5 day pattern instead. |
