I've just got my frozen food delivered and this time I ordered some rabbit pinkies (about the size of a large mouse) and some hamsters (about the size of a weaner rat but chunkier) for my older snake. I usually feed a rotation of chicks and rats but fancied trying something different. Anyone tried rabbits and hamsters??

Rabbit pinkies are 65p and hamsters are 75p so cheaper than rats from frozen reptile.
Fed him the rabbit tonight and it went down very nicely indeed, he loved it, after he had killed it several times over! |

I'd be interested to know the nutritional of a rabbit pinky compared to say a large mouse or rat weaner. Mouse pinks don't have much to them compared to the adults, is it the same with bunnies? |

no idea Silverwings, but it's the biggest pinky you'll ever see, very big head so there must be some nutritional goodies in there!! I would imagine less fat than a rat, no fur so less vitamins maybe. I just thought a different rodent would vary his diet a little, if he takes the hamsters ok I'll probably go with rat - chick - rabbit - hamster rotation. |

The composition and percengages of fat and protein will be very important. After all, you can't feed an adult snake the weight of an adult rat but in mouse pinkies. The amount of muscle (flesh) on a pinky anything is going to be minute, therefore the protein content will be extremely low. |

True, which is why it's important to vary the diet. There is no way I would feed him exclusively on any single rodent unless there was no other option, even though it's said they are fine to live that way, albeit not natural. The way I see it I am providing him with a variety of prey so as to mimic 'real life' living conditions. If I could get frogs and lizards he would have those too, maybe a quails egg would be good. |

Me too, funnily enough, but chickens eggs are a bit too big lol. I saw an awesome video of a hoggie chowing down on a boiled egg and waved some at Luna out of interest, but she didn't see it as food. Wonder if she'd show any interest in smaller raw eggs. |

There is a video on youtube of a corn eating Dove eggs, they are bigger than quail but smaller than chicken. No idea where to get them though and don't say from a Dove! Tesco sell quail eggs but I don't know whether they would need to be newly laid or not. |

I haven't heard of anyone trying rabbit pinkies before Lee, but have heard that if you give hamsters you sometimes have a problem getting them to eat anything else.
As for nutritional content you might find this interesting - http://www.rodentpro.com/qpage_articles_03.asp
I'm sure if you search 'quail eggs' on here you'll find some threads discussing feeding corns eggs.
