Hey All
I am a massive reptile guy keeping snakes and lizards, but I really want to learn all the different corn snake morphs.. how can this be done as I have looked about and cant see any vids or websites that show you any of this.. I am planning on breeding my amel this year.. possibly with a lavender and I want to learn the morphs so I know what I get.. and can price them accordingly.. any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. |

How much do you know about genetics? Recessive/dominant morphs and how they work is an important part of breeding corn snakes.
This is a good explanation of it -

There's a great site for corn snake morphs and there is a calculator available too which will tell you what you will get from a pairing.

So that's not an easy website to understand, am I right in thinking the list on the right side of the chart is if you put ----- + ------ the hatching would be the answer on the left? is that right? and I don't understand the triples bit haha..
Also this is my female, can people tell by looking at her what morphs are in her? obvs I know she is an amel... but anything else..
I did also have a female snow corn but my ex girlfriend sold both snakes when we split but the person who bought them was nice enough to let me have this one back free but didn't want to let the snow go :( but this year ill build up my collection starting with find a female for fanta to breed with this year :)

Your snake is an amel. That means she has two copies of the amel gene. Amel is recessive which means for it to be visible, there have to be two copies. She could be carrying one copy of almost any other gene without showing anything and without knowing her parents there isn't any way of knowing what she is carrying apart from breeding her.
If you breed her with a Lavender which isn't carrying a copy of any other genes you will just get all normal (wild type) babies which are all carrying amel and lavender Does that make more sense?
Normals/wild type corn snakes do not sell very well, there are a lot of them available. Most people price them at £10-15 each depending on what genes they are carrying. |

| okay, well yeah I understand that normal don't sell well as have see lots down to around £7-£10.. I haven't yet bought a female for Fanta to breed with, so what male would you recommend if it was you breeding? thanks. |

| Without knowing any possible hets it's really hard to suggest anything. When I bred my guys I didn't do it with profit in mind, I wasn't thinking about what morphs would sell. I had two snakes I loved and wanted to see them bring more tiny bundles of scaley joy into the world. I disagree when you say normals don't sell well, I just think people are too impatient. There are a *lot* of corn snake breeders all trying to sell babies at the same time. I have had no problem selling my normal babies, and I set a price of £25 and stuck to it. Sure, it's taken a while and I still have some left, but I've nurtured them since they were first laid in June, I'm more than happy to keep them and feed them as long as it takes. |

I admire your approach SilverWings I think that's the best way to think about it. I meant that they can be difficult to sell right away.
However, I think it is quite difficult to make a profit selling corn snakes unless you do it quite large scale.
As SilverWings said, it is difficult to say what to pair your snake with if you don't know what it carries. Some genes are more common than others though, Anery, Amel and Hypo seem to be the most common to pop up in unknown het animals e.g Anery male with unknown hets has been proven to carry Amel. Perhaps an Anery het Amel or a snow would be a good bet but there's no guarantees. |

| I am not in this for any profit at all as I have already agreed with a reptile shop they will have the hatchling for £10 each if I fail to sell them. I am purely in it to do something I admire and have always wanted to do and it will be an amazing experience.. no profit intended :)but I do want to learn as much as I can about all the breeding and morphs as one day I would love to work in or even own my own reptile shop :) Thanks for all your help so far guys, I am just currently looking though sites trying to find a male to breed with my female that is not 1000000 miles away! haha! |

I'm no good at working out the genes at all but I had the most amazing hatchies with my Amel & Carolina/Normal. No known history of morphs.
I've kept one of my diffused, very special, beautiful snow (1st hatchling) and sold the rest.
Having said that, be careful, they were an exceptional clutch of beautiful snakes. Not all hatchlings are so easy to find homes for.
Even the more unusual morphes don't always get a home.
Are you prepared and willing to look after any hatchies that don't find a home?
There are websites to look on for the different morphs and possible breeding outcomes, and I'm sure somebody more capable on the internet will put up a link for you soon.......................... |

| There are already so many normals in rehoming places :( I have to question is it really worth breeding because you can? I sold my normals to a petshop for £5. I seriously regret not keeping hold of them to try and find them a home myself. I have to disagree with silver wings, they don't sell well, if they sold well they wouldn't be with breeders, petshops or rehoming places for the length some of them are. Things that sell well are not with the sellers long. Heck, snows, amels and anerys struggle. |

| You would get Amels het Anery. If the amel is carrying anery then you could get some snows as well but there is no way of knowing if it is het for anery unless you know the parents. |

| I sold my amels for £15 each last year ... Again, they can struggle too, as Sta~ple said, even amels and snows can be tricky to find good homes for. There are a lot of people breeding corn snakes out there |
