I'm thinking of getting Vince sexed, not for breeding, just because I want to know really! Can an adult snake (mines 6 years old) be probed, or can it only be done on younger snakes? Could it be in a any way harmful to it? Is it expensive? If it can't be don it's not a problem I just wanted to know out of interest.
Thanks

Adults get probed, youngsters/hatchling usually 'popped'. Most reptile shops can do it, some are free sometimes there's a small fee :) if done right it shouldn't pose any risk. It isn't necessarily 100 percent though... I am sure it was someone on here had theirs probed and it turned out to be the opposite!

As serena said it ins't 100%, there is the risk that some one could force the prob too far causing injury and giving you the out come of male as they think the prob went in quite deep. you can also get false females as the snake has clenched up and the probe hasn't gone in very far.
I learnt to probe but have to admit am very nervous about doing it, it's alright if the snake is being cooperative but if they aren't playing I can see how easy it would be to accidently hurt them.

I see, I'll ask my Mum and local reptile shop about it if I'm unsure I won't go ahead with it. Thanks for the replies

That's shocking more of a butcher than a vet.

We've warned people off him, and dealt with the situation. At the time didnt think of taking stronger action just took my snake home and made sure he was healthy. I still keep a close eye on him now, the prolapse never lasts, he hasnt needed a sugar bath or such likes. Otherwise he is a very happy snake. But im never going to that vet again and wil find one out of town!

That's terrible! I might not do it, not that it was a big deal anyway. Vince will stay unconfirmed, but I always thought of him as a boy anyway!

Nah, I just realised I don't mind not knowing, because if it turns out it's a girl, I couldn't call him Vince!

I know some people need to know the sex of their snake, for breeding, Louis but I've always been of the opinion that unless you need to know then it's better not to put the snake through the stress of the travel and the procedure itself, especially when it's not 100% accurate and there is a small amount of risk. So I'm pleased that you've decided to let Vince stay as Vince .

Only one of my snakes has been sexed. I took it to my local reptile shop, that breeds it's own snakes, because it had a lump that I wanted checked out. As I was there I asked them to probe it and was told it was male. That's what I'd bought Silvesta as, so wasn't surprised. What did surprise me was when I discovered infertile eggs in 'his' hide a couple of months later . Silvesta became Silvi .

I'm so sorry about your snake Scary . It's a lesson to us all about how careful we need to be with supposed 'experts'. I'm glad that he is as ok as possible and he's definitely in good hands .

Xxx

Scary that is absolutely disgusting, how on earth could he be considered an exotics expert? Vets must have a regulatory body the equivalent of the GMC (General Medical Council) and if it was my pet I would definitely be considering reporting him :(

I'm not sure if it's effected by how long ago it happened or any action you've already taken but I guess the first stop is the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. They register vets and investigate any complaints.
