Hi all. Ive had Loki (taiwanese beauty) now since May and he has been fine, a bit skitty when first get out but settles quickly. He has grown quick and is now to big for his little rub. HAve been in process of sorting his new viv out for last month and a half taken longer than expected to sort, HMRC messed up my tax code so was massivly under paid last month. Went to get him out today, took everything out as normal (faun small so have to take out to get him) and he went beserk, usualy run away/hide in substrate for for a min then usually settles and can get out. However couldnt get out today as very defensive and striking glass etc. managed to get hide back in which left in and covered the faun with Jacket which he seemed to appreciate and went back into hide. Then managed to get the rest back in. Temps and everything are fine. Could this be becuase he is to cramped? Hope to get him in new viv at weekend providing can get a drill for the heat mat.

Tais can be a little unpredictable anyway, from what I've heard they tend to settle down around the 1-2 year mark if you've had them from hatchies. My guy is a year old and clearly hasn't been handled much so he's always trying to get away. He likes to sleep in my sleeve, but trying to get him back out is fun, the other day he was hissing and striking, clearly not happy. Check he's not due a shed, could be making him cranky, otherwise I wouldn't be too concerned, just keep on with your routine. He could just be having an off day too, perhaps he woke up on the wrong side of the faun.
When mines having a hissy fit I find firm, confident movements when taking him out and handling him tend to work best. He has yet to tag me (although I have no doubt he will one day succeed).

Ok thankyou, i have heard that to. Didnt know about the settling down though, i know rubi suddenly became less quick at one point. I ahve to be so careful when taking him out as can suddenly dart out have had to catch him in mid air on a couple of occasions lol, not handling as much as would like as difficult to get out, hes long but still worm like lol. he could possibly be due shed about a month ago, would be a bit early but wouldnt put it passed him. Yeah i am a bit nervous when getting out, worried about spooking him or him tagging me, he has got me once, he was in blue and i didnt realise (not as obvious as a corn lol)

A trick to getting them out that we learned with our king snake is to get an enclosed hide that you can take out of the tank, then take the snake out. It's a lot easier than chasing them round. You could try a small tupperware box with a hole in it, then you can take it out and you have easy access through the lid. Aleron has a cereal box with some sphagnum moss in it, right on his hot spot, so it's pretty muh a sure thing that when I want him he'll be in there. Take the box out, reach in, pull out snake. Job done XD

Good luck, hope he likes his new viv. I have to say if he's suddenly become that grumpy my initial thought was also that he may be going into blue.

I wouldn't - might as well have his settling in period whilst he's not handleable anyway ;) Plus, if it's not because he's going into blue then he might welcome the extra space?
