| hello my snake tank is at about 26c is this to cold for him and if it is too cold what kinda watt heat matt do i need ps(he doe's have a heat matt i ust dont think its powerful enough) :) |

A thermostat is needed for any heat source as it will ensure that the temperature does not exceed what is relevant for the species you are keeping. Depending on your budget there are a few to choose from and a mat stat (on/off) will be the cheapest but not the most accurate (but still good enough) and if you can spend a little more then I would suggest a pulse proportionate thermostat as it is much more accurate. Have a god read of this thread, it will show you the importance of using a stat

It may seem a little daft to you people advising thermostats when the heat is not really high enough, but heat mats regularly go well over the heat safe for a corn. Obviously you have the opposite problem at the moment but need to get the correct size mat and thermostat for your set up. We need to know more info really - are you heating a faun or viv, is the mat inside or outside? If heating a faun or glass viv it should be outside with a layer of polystyrene or similar under the mat to refelct the heat back up to the tank. A wooden viv it should be on the floor inside the viv. Also how are you measuring your temps? If using a dial thermometer for example they are very inaccurate and only measure the ambient air temp, while the temp where the corns sits on top of the mat will actually be higher than they show. You need to use a digital thermometer with the probe at the hottest part, ie on top of the mat/floor under the substrate to get a proper reading. The wattage is dependant purely on the size of the mat, so don't worry about wattage, just make sure the area you are heating is equal to between 1/3 and 1/2 half of the floor area.

I echo very strongly what Donnie and Smartbunny have said. In particular it would be good to know how you are measuring your temps. As Smartbunny has said, dial thermometers are useless and if it is situated partway up the wall of the viv, which is where they usually are, you actually don't have a clue what the temp in the warm end is, at substrate level over the heatmat where your corn is, which is what's most important.
As your snake is a small one I'm guessing its in a faunarium or something similar. This should help you understand how you need to set it up so its right - Setting up a hatchling corn - My 101 .
Getting the heat right is vital as snakes need temps of between 27 - 29oC to digest properly. If they don't have that then you are risking them regurging. Please sort this out as soon as possible, for your snake's sake.
By the way, I don't think I know you snake's name yet???
